All posts for the month March, 2020

Well, this is definitely a different week than usual on the blog. First off, for those of you in health care and other essential businesses, keeping us and our family and friends safe, the lights on and trucks moving, a massive thank you from the ACBB family.

For many, beer is a happy diversion from work, while for others, it is their work! Kudos to those who are still able to support the brewers and cidermakers by ordering beer for delivery and pickup safely, but most important at this time is to keep everyone safe and healthy.

A logistical note: to keep from having to update multiple pages several times per day as the situation and the way breweries are dealing with it changes, we’re going to stick to one: last week’s Wrap-Up will be our itemization of what breweries and cideries across the region are doing in light of the current situation. It will be our reference for what’s open and closed, how to safely pick up product from their location, and order beer delivery at home. It’s been updated a ton since we sent it out last week, so do take a look for the latest details. And if there is anything missing or out of date, we’d appreciate a quick nudge via email or social media (Ig and Tw preferred, Fb often gets missed).

Let’s start our day in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, where Church Brewing calls home. They are shining a light through the darkness this week with Illuminate Kveik Pale Ale. Light-coloured and -tasting malts offer a base for the bounty of hops used in this beer, starting from a light bittering addition of Magnum, before massive dry-hopping of Mosaic and Vic Secret. These offer big flavour and aroma of citrus, tropical notes of mango and papaya, which are only enhanced thanks to the kveik yeast employed. As a refresher, this family of yeasts originated in Norway, and after thousands of generations of use (yeast, not people), has become something totally distinct from other brewer’s yeast: very high temperature tolerant (traditional ale yeasts tend to give off some unpleasant flavours when fermented too warm, whereas as kveik thrives in it), with some lovely fruity characteristics presented, thanks to its production of esters. This particular yeast was sourced through Guelph’s Escarpment Labs, who have been researching the history and microbiology of this family for a while, and have the nerdy ahem important information on it. This beer used their Voss Kveik which gave them plenty of those juicy characteristics, and stays a bit hazy. At 5.0% ABV, and low bitterness, this is a beer you can use to light your way in these uncertain times… Available at their retail shop for

Montague, PEI’s Copper Bottom brewery likes to celebrate spring with a saison they call Better Weather. Although they’re not able to celebrate the coming season in the same way as usual this year, they’re still bringing that farmhouse ale to market for folks to enjoy. This year, they went with a French Saison yeast for a very crisp and dry beer, highlighting their use of Shoreline Malting 2-row. With some fruity esters completing the picture, expect this 5% ABV and 25 IBU beer to be refreshing but still interesting on the palate. You can get it from them via their webstore for pickup as well as via walk-in (social distancing enforced) at their retail location. You can also get it via delivery island-wide from their delivery service (check their Fb page for details on that!). And when this whole mess blows over, you can safely expect it to be on the shelves at select PEILC stores too.

In Yarmouth, Heritage Brewing has a new beer available for delivery in the tri-county area. They took their Blueberry Grunt, a lightly sour blueberry ale they released last fall, and replaced a portion of blueberries with cranberries, to give us Cranberry/Blueberry Sour Wheat. A mix of lightly tart and lightly sweet (but tipping more towards tart, thanks to the cranberry addition), this 5% ABV brew is refreshing and light, just the thing to get you into the Spring mood as you sip it on your deck. Check out our details from last week on how you can get some of this brew delivered to your door; their taproom is also open for retail sales.

Sea Level’s Port Williams location may be closed, but they are still working hard to produce great beer at their Millstone Harvest location in nearby Sheffield Mills. The latest to be released is also one of the first that features the sole us of their own malt and hops, grown right onsite. Millstone Harvest Pale Ale uses their own farm grown barley, malted at nearby Horton Ridge malt, to create Pilsner, Pale, and Honey malts. And from their hopfield comes Cashmere, Cascade, and Glacier hops, coming together for a “light, refreshing, everyday beer”. While they will be sending cans to NSLC locations across the province soon, you can grab growler fills at Millstone Harvest at 9146 Hwy 221 in Sheffield Mills today. Just remember to call (902-582-2337), email (sealevelbrewing@gmail.com) or DM them on their social media accounts in advance, and take advantage of their “Card in the Yard” pickup option. Hit them up the same way for more details on their delivery options.

For those of you in Sussex, you may already be taking advantage of the beer-to-go option at Sussex Ale Works. If so, great! If not, we encourage you to do so, and want to take the opportunity to also point out that they are still brewing new beers, and have just released their latest, a Belgian Dubbel named 13 Fathoms. Details on this brew are extremely light; however, we can tell you that they’re describing it as “sweet and smooth”. We wish we had more, but maybe it’s enough to pique your interest? Who doesn’t love a good Dubbel, right? Anyhoo, it’s 7.8% ABV and can be ordered online and picked up at the brewpub; check out last week’s post for further details on making your order.

Back to Nova Scotia, where Backstage Brewing has launched Photograph, what was supposed to be a new beer for the Nova Scotia Craft Beer Festival. An American IPA hopped entirely with Mosaic, at least those of you in the Stellarton area may be able to give it a try! At 6.6% ABV and 60 IBUs, expect lots of delightful Mosaic character – tropical and stone fruit, citrus, mango, etc. – available for growler exchange at the brewery, 12-6 pm Monday to Saturday. They also hope to have bottles in the near future.

Nothing brand-spanking-new from TrailWay this week, but we will mention that their very popular DIPA, Sensible Nonsense, has been freshly-canned and is now available for delivery to anywhere in Fredericton, or pick-up at the brewery (and further distro across the province soon). Citrusy and dank, 7.6% ABV, and all sorts of hoppy.

In Halifax, 2 Crows Brewing has brought back one of their more subtle beers, the Refresh Lager. This delicate 4.8% ABV lager is a full two month process, starting from Shoreline Malting Pilsner (along with a lil bit of chit malt and flaked rice), dry-hopped with Hallertau Blanc, then krausened (using new beer to give the yeast some reinforcements), before lagering for 8 weeks. Like great BBQ, this one is done low and slow. And like great BBQ, it’s worth the wait! It’s available now at their retail shop with click-and-collect, as well as online delivery within HRM, as well as province-wide, and also elsewhere in Canada (yup!). And for those homebrewers looking to try and recreate this at home, there are no secrets when Jeremy Taylor is behind the wheel, here are all the details you need. Maybe drop him off a bottle/growler when it’s safe to do so, wouldja? Oh, and if you’re looking for a fun way to spend your afternoon, listen to Jeremy and Nick who appeared on the latest episode of Rival & Queen, getting hosts Ashley and Sarah up to speed on all things beer.

Speaking of podcasts, our favourite local beer podcast 902 BrewCast may be respecting the social distancing order, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still releasing episodes! Their March 2020 Tasting Episode is a great summary of how breweries are dealing with the shutdown of their licensee customers, closure of their own taprooms, and change in buying options for customers. Plus, they chatted about dipping into their beer cellars to enjoy something solo or with pals (you know, sometime in the future). You can stream it on their website, or check your favourite podcast app this morning, because you already subscribe to it, right? Right?!?

During all this craziness, expect to see a serious drop in collaboration brews, for obvious reasons! On the bright side, a collab brewed before the sh*t really hit the fan, will be available over the next week. Scotia Lager was brewed as a collaboration between Off Track, Propeller, and Spindrift at Propeller’s brewery. Featuring a simple malt bill of Superior Pilsner and a little bit of Crystal, it was hopped throughout the boil with Loral and Tettnang, to 38 IBUs. Fermented with a classic German lager strain, and then lagered for a period of time, it weighs in at 5% ABV. Expect some spicy, floral, and herbal notes thanks to the hop varieties used, all in an approachable and easy-drinking package. This beer was submitted as the annual Made Here By Us beer for the province; it didn’t get selected, but the breweries decided to brew it anyway, and now you get to try it! It will be available in cans at all three breweries over the next few days (whether for delivery or pickup, however they’re operating), and will be popping up at NSLCs as well, with the official launch coming Monday!

We at the ACBB had been planning to hold a big Trivia Night at the Auction House next Friday, in part to help kick off Nova Scotia Craft Beer Month, but with restaurants and bars closed, we obviously won’t be doing that! However, we still want to get together with all of you, share some beers, give away a ton of prizes, and have a fun time. Sooooo, we’re going to give online trivia a shot! Next Wednesday, April 1st, at 8 PM, we will be holding the trivia remotely/virtually! We’ll have plenty of head scratching questions, of course plenty of amazing prizes from our brewery pals. For those, we’ll mostly be connecting you with the brewery directly, to ensure no contact. OK, the way to win is to sign your team up in advance, and that way we can keep track of everyone. Click the link here! Plus there’s more info on the FB page for the event. We can’t wait to see you Wednesday!

Hardisty Logo

Located in the suburb of Cole Harbour, made famous by being home of some of the best hockey players in recent history, lies the small community of Colby Village. And with the opening of Hardisty Brewing last week, it has yet another claim to fame: owner, brewer, cellarperson, and head cleaner (always cleaning!) Charlene Robichaud has launched Hardisty as a way to share her long-time passion with her community. We chatted with Char, from a socially appropriate distance, to learn more about her beer offerings, plans for distribution, and the future of Hardisty Brewing, “Inspired by Community”.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Charlene Robichaud (but everyone calls me Char). I have been brewing all grain for almost 20 years. I currently work full time Monday to Friday for a telecommunications company as a web application programmer, and then brew on the weekends and manage the fermentation, dry hopping and packaging in the evenings through the week. I love both my day job and brewing beer, so starting this company just fits with things I enjoy doing.

How did you get into the world of beer?
My brother-in-law introduced me to real craft beer 20 years ago out in Alberta. He was the Master Brewer of a craft brewery there and he taught me to appreciate the styles and complexity of beer. I got to see how beer was made, the equipment, and distribution. He taught me to brew all-grain on a homebrew scale, and from there I developed my skills and experimented with ingredients and styles.

Beer Kitchen

What made you decide to take the steps into opening a brewery?
I have been fortunate to own homes that had space for an all-grain brewing setup, and in the past 3 years I have renovated a room in my home dedicated to brewing. I call it my ‘beer kitchen’. For me, having a beer is social, I love having my friends over to have a pint (or more) of beer and hang out in my beer kitchen. This once hobby has naturally progressed to going pro and starting my own brewing company. I have always wanted to, and I realized I could start small (a nano) in my beer kitchen and just start to get my beer out there.

Can you tell us about the beers you have available now? And what may be coming in the future?
I have started out with the 2 beers that will be staples in my beer lineup. A SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) that I called Block Party, as it got its start as a beer I brewed for a Hardisty Court Community block party we had last summer. It uses 2-Row for the malt, and Simcoe for the hops. At 4.5% ABV and 30 IBU, it offers a tropical and citrus aroma and flavour, with a malty backbone. The Smoked Porter I have brewed for years, I’ve played with the grain bill over the years but have now locked it in. It’s 4.7% ABV and 26 IBU, and uses Smoked and Chocolate malts, and is hopped with Northern Brewer and Willamette.

While keeping the above 2 beers in stock I will brew smaller batches of IPAs, like a New England Style with a lot of hop aroma, and an East Coast style with a punch of hops for your palate. I have a witbier I enjoy brewing during the summer and in the winter, an Imperial Stout infused with spices and chocolate. I also plan to keep experimenting with ingredients and spices to create one-offs to keep things interesting and fun.

Hardisty Cans

Enough talk, we’re getting thirsty! How can folks enjoy your beer?
Since I am a nano sized brewery in my home my distribution is by ‘members’. My business model is to be a Community Shared Brewery (CSB), which is much like a Community Shared Agriculture. Home delivery is the focus to start, as by-law prohibits me from on-site sales or having a taproom in my home. So I am canning my beer into 473ml cans, and selling them in a 4-pack. Customers within my community (footprint) will be able to register on my website and pay a monthly fee to have a certain amount of beer in a specific timeframe of 3 months or 6 months. Based on the membership a user selects, they will be able to select the beer they want from the site, and it will be delivered during specific timeframes to the member’s home. They will also be able to purchase add-ons based on stock availability. The site and CSB membership will be set up by the end of April. However… in the meantime we have beer and are ready to sell! For now sales are happening by word of mouth. The delivery footprint is Colby Village in Cole Harbour, NS. Follow us on Instagram and DM me to set up a delivery. We deliver on Thursdays, between 4 and 5 PM-ish. Customers can pay at the door with ‘Tap and Pay’. When possible, I also would like to sell kegs to local pubs in the Dartmouth area so that others can try my beer outside of my delivery footprint (Colby Village).

Do you have some initial accounts in the area lined up to serve your beers?
No accounts yet, but we will announce them in our social media as it happens. When the pubs start opening up again we will be able to see about setting up some accounts.

Have you had any assistance from other breweries and folks in Atlantic Canada?
The brewing community here is so awesome! Yeah, I sat down with the guys at Brightwood Brewery, and they let me ask all the questions about getting started in your home to opening a full size brewery. I also unofficially visited many breweries last summer to see how they ran there set ups and I was fascinated by Shipwright Brewing in Lunenburg and their 3BBL set up with the walk up counter bar. It made me feel like my beer kitchen could certainly work as a first step.

Brewhouse

Where do you hope to see your brewery in the next 2-3 years?
In 2 to 3 years, I plan to be brewing in my beer kitchen. If the question was in the next 5 to 6 years… the plan is to have my own taproom and brewery somewhere close to this community.

Let’s get nerdy! Tell us about your brewhouse equipment.
I have a unique 1BBL (120 litre) set up. It consists of two 65 litre Robobrew Brewzillas to brew in, and a standard RoboBrew as my Hot Liquor Tank. When I brew a double batch, it then goes in my 1BBL Stainless Steel Unitank to ferment and later carbonate. I then can brew a different type of beer in each Brewzilla the next brew day and ferment those in my smaller fermenters. Currently I can brew 400 to 500 litres a month.

Canner

Do you have a favorite beer style, beer, or brewery you enjoy drinking?
Personally, I love IPAs, Imperials, Double, and Rye IPAs. Lots of hops! When I go out, ordering a flight is the way I go so I can enjoy a bit of what everyone is brewing. I do have so many favorites and I am always purchasing whatever is new to me from any of the craft breweries. Some people travel to see the sites, I always look up the breweries and beer stores so I can visit, taste and purchase a collection of different styles to try. I’m a geek, I have a diary of every beer I have tried since 2016. I have a database of 208 beers from over 84 breweries 98% of it is all Canadian microbreweries.

How about favourite style or ingredient to brew with?
I like to experiment with spice blends. Star Anise, nutmeg, citrus peels, cloves, and rosemary to name a few.

Thank you again to Char for getting us up to speed with Hardisty Brewing, and how we can enjoy her beer. Check out Instagram and Facebook for the latest beer news, and sign up for their CSB when it launches in April. Congratulations again!

With licensees closed or greatly reducing accessibility, the beer and cider producers of the region are changing their approach to getting the good stuff in your hands. Many are offering delivery and curbside pickup to keep employees and drinkers safe. This is the time for local beer and cider, good food, and live music fans to step up and support the community in the ways that we’re able, by continuing to buy product, or ordering giftcards for use in the future, while still protecting ourselves and loved ones. We’ve moved the weekly news from March 20 to the end of the post, so this list is easily accessible.

Here is our unofficial and almost certainly “out of date as soon as we publish” list of what breweries and cideries are up to at the moment. If you have more recent info, PLEASE LET US KNOW, and we’ll update it here.

There are cans of two beers available currently: their Block Party SMaSH, a 4.5% ABV, 30 IBU, Pale Ale, brewed with 2-Row and Simcoe, tropical and citrus flavour and aroma with a malty backbone, and Smoked Porter, 4.7% ABV and 26 IBU, with a lovely campfire aroma and light nutty flavour, thanks to Smoked and Chocolate malt additions, and hopped with Northern Brewer and Willamette. Look for more IPAs, Rye ales, and a Witbier to be released in the coming months. Hardisty will be launching their website shortly, where folks can sign up for their CSA-like Community Shared Brewery membership, but in the meantime, reach out to them on Instagram to request beer via their Thursday afternoon deliveries in the Colby Village area. We’ll have much more with Char coming soon! Congratulations!

Across the bridge in Halifax, Unfiltered Brewing has released a new beer this week, continuing in the single-hop series that has brought us DOA, Danko, Deity, Edgy, and many more, comes Satisfaction. Featuring the absolutely phenomenal Sabro hop, Nash used it in quantity throughout the process, for a solid bitterness, as well as a big aroma and flavour in the tropical realm, as well as with some resin and pine, in this 7.5% ABV beer. Available on draught for fills as well as in cans (see below for details on grabbing some).

A short distance away, 2 Crows Brewing has released a new beer this week as well, something a little darker. Counsel is an 8.3% ABV Imperial Stout that was brewed with a wide variety of malts, as is often typical for the style. These include assorted caramel malts, Roasted Barley, Chocolate malt, oats, and flaked barley. The wort was boiled for 24 hours (!!!… we’re well aware of 2 Crows’ extended brew days but this is outright ridiculous!) to greatly increase caramelization, and was then fermented with Oslo Kveik yeast, nice and warm. Once fermentation was complete, the beer was conditioned on French oak and toasted coconut (100 lbs worth), and then finally lagered for an additional 5 weeks. The final beer was canned (in 355 mL cans) and allowed to condition for three months to really have those flavours blend together. It’s tasting “roasty, smooth, and lush” with soft note of coconut, light tannin, and a clean finish. A beer like this deserves a launch party, but alas those days are behind us for now, so it’s available this weekend for delivery in the HRM, click-and-collect, and wider delivery via Canada Post. You can also pick up cans at the brewery to-go. For more info on 2 Crows shipping, check out our handy delivery section below.

Port Rexton Brewing has a new beer they’re releasing today, in the hope of celebrating the spirit of collaboration and community between breweries in this time of uncertainty and difficulties. Brewed with Rough Waters Brewing Co., Iron Rock Brewing Co., RagnaRöck Northern Brewing Company Ltd, Ninepenny Brewing, and Bannerman Brewing Co., it’s a “Nano” Kveik IPA called Next Generation 2020 that rolls in at an extremely sessionable 2.9% ABV, perfect for a little working from home day boil (ssshhhhh)! Lots of Galaxy and Mosaic in the dry hop, this beer is super hazy with plenty of aroma and flavor of light tropical fruit, soft candy, apple and pear, with a touch of a vanilla note on the finish from the Kveik yeast.

Today at noon, Garrison will be dropping Bringing Sexy Bock, the winner of their 2019 Home Brew-Off competition (aka the Good Old Days). The winning homebrewer was David Pepper, who got to brew his recipe on the Garrison system with head brewer Daniel Girard. The grist is nice and complex, with Munich, Aromatic, Extra Special, Vienna, Wheat, and Melanoidin malts all playing nicely together (but hopefully 6 feet apart). Hopped lightly with Hallertau (to 25 IBUs), this dark brown beer has “aromas of malt-rich bread, caramel, and dark fruit”. Over in flavour town, see if you can pick our caramel, pumpernickel bread, and black licorice, all balanced by a light bitterness. This 7.2% ABV brew was packaged in 473 mL cans, which can be picked up at either retail store; delivery is also an option within Halifax and Dartmouth (free if your order is $30 or more).

Rounding out the news this week is a happysad entry from Good Robot Brewing. They held their FemmeBrew competition on the weekend, where brew(st)ers were tasked with featuring local and foraged ingredients in their beer. After much deliberation, the winning beer chosen was a Grisette, brewed by beer writer Kim Hart Macneill, a longtime homebrewer. We *believe* her winning beer will be brewed on GRBC’s big system, just not sure of the timeline. The sad part of this story is that this week marked brewster Kelly Costello’s last week with GRBC, as she is moving onto other pursuits, namely obtaining a law degree. Now she’ll be mixing shit up and kicking butt on a bigger scale! Best of luck to Kello in the future, we’re sure it’s not the last we’ve heard from her!
