Welcome to the “Oops All Newsbites!” version of your favourite Friday newsletter. Plenty of new beer to share with you, and not a lot of time, hence the shortened format. Please remember that tomorrow, September 30th, is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time for all to reflect on the atrocities of the past, and how we can make Canada more equitable for all, especially First Nations. Some breweries and retailers will be closed Saturday, in observation, so check first before heading out.

Trailway on Fredericton’s North Side received a pair of unusual visitors earlier this month, and while they didn’t stick around long, the video evidence is quite funny! Embracing the fun, Trailway has released On The Loose West Coast IPA. 5.5% ABV, with a healthy bitterness and aromatic in all the ways a great piney, resinous, WC IPA should be. This beer was a small batch, so you’ll want to head to the brewery locations in Fredericton and Saint John to grab cans before they flee too!

Those reading this Friday can still make it down to Battery Park in Dartmouth for a Big Spruce Tap Takeover. With 20 beers available on tap, there is a healthy mix of core favourites, seasonal releases, as well as at least one new one. Let’s tell you about Trop Style, an oak-fermented Saison. Bright and refreshing, there are notes of pepper and herb, as well as a bit of funk and wood from the foedre aging process. You’ll also be able to grab cans of Trop Style at the brewery and for delivery and shipping! A-Marzen Grace, their Marzen/Festbier also makes its debut for the year on tap at BP (as well as Horton Ridge and the Stilly Beergarden for their Oktoberfest celebrations Sunday). The Wanderers Citra Session IPA makes its return this week as well, on tap and in cans at better establishments.

Lunn’s Mill Beer is celebrating with an Oktoberfest party tomorrow, and they have a new beer to mark the occasion! Brewer Jörg has put together a Red Wheat Ale, using traditional German and American hops, and the classic German Weiss yeast for a touch of banana and clove. Grab a Maßkrug of Maldix tomorrow during the party, and a couple more in cans for the road! And all the Oktoberfest details are right here.

If you’re a fan of Breton Brewing, you know doubt already know their long-running Black Angus IPA and its “big” brother, Crazy Angus DIPA. This week they introduced the “little” brother of those two, Tiny Angus. Just 4.5% ABV and a crisp, citrus taste, just not as big. Find it at the tap room and online shop for delivery in the CBRM and HRM starting next week.

Also returning from Breton this week is a former seasonal that has earned a callup to the full-time lineup. Irish Stout is just that, a 4.2% beer that’s as dark as coal, with plenty of roasted coffee flavor and a smooth chocolatey finish. This one is also available at the taproom and via the online shop, but is also seeing wider distribution via select NSLC locations throughout the province.

Perhaps the first of this year’s fresh-hopped beers is pouring now at Schoolhouse Brewery in Windsor, NS, their Freshman Fresh Hopped New England IPA. Sourcing hops from Wicked Hops in the Valley, more than 20 kilos of Cascade, Chinook, and Centennial were used during the whirlpool to impart major aromatics of pine, citrus, and even a touch of freshly mown grass. Using a yeast that encourages a bit of haze just means there’s more flavour in every glass, so be sure to drop by the brewery this weekend to get it while it’s fresh!

We promised we’d keep it short and sweet, so let’s be sure we keep you to your schedule as we round out the news!

Tatamagouche has brought back Peppy Pink Peppercorn & Rose Hip Saison, a 7.1% Belgian Saison that really is exactly as described on the can. A bit of pepper character from the yeast is complemented by the pink peppercorn, and floral notes abound, from the late addition of the rose hips. Darling English Dark Mild has also returned this week, a favourite of cask-ale drinkers across the province, so look for this 3.6% beauty on hand pumps at better locations in your neighbourhood.

Propeller Brewing has decided it’s Stout Season, and we agree! However, they are putting their own spin on it with the return of Flat White, their White Stout. The beer is golden in colour, but if you closed your eyes, you’d swear it was jet black, thanks to the addition of cold-brewed coffee from Java Blend and cacao nibs. Loads of flaked oats help increase the body and mouthfeel, and impart a lasting, frothy head. On tap and in cans now at all of the Prop Shops across HRM!

And finally, our friends from away at Godspeed Brewery have sent four tasty offerings to Halifax Waterfront’s Bishop’s Cellar. Yuzu Saison, Ochame Green Tea IPA, Sklepnik Czech Lager (fermented in pitch-lined foeders), and Arbeir Hefeweizen (a collaboration with Michael Hancock, of Dennison’s). Drop down this weekend, or place an order for delivery or shipping Nova Scotia-wide!

In case you missed it, Mount Uniacke’s first professional brewery is now open and selling beer to the public. Party Time Brewing is (currently) a one-person operation, selling beer in cans and growlers to those fortunate enough to live nearby. We published a full ACBB Profile with James Marshall earlier this week to learn about the man behind the beer. Since Wednesday, we’ve heard that the first kegs of PTB have been ordered, and are now pouring on draught in the wild! Battery Park on Ochterloney in Dartmouth has purchased both the Garage Party Blonde and Polar Dip Cold IPA. The Blonde is 4.5% ABV, and features a touch of Honey and Crystal malts to complement the Pale and Pilsner malt base, with a robust addition of Willamette to keep it interesting. The Polar Dip is staying true to the new Cold IPA style: the use of flaked corn keeps the body lighter than a traditional IPA, while plenty of Cascade and Citra are used in the whirlpool and dry hop. Congratulations again to Marshall!

In more “New Nova Scotia Brewery” news, Coldstream Clear Distillery has released a beer in their extensive portfolio of spirits and RTD bevies. Nova Scotia Lager is a 5.0% American Lager, ultimately brewed to be crisp, clean, and supremely enjoyable. Using their in-house pilot system, they brewed many trials of ingredients and techniques before being satisfied with the current recipe. Their 2000 litre brewhouse features a mash filter system, a rarity in Canadian Craft Beer, allowing for excellent control and 95% efficiency in the brewing process. Look for 12-packs of cans at Coldstream Clear locations in Stewiacke, Antigonish, and Dartmouth Crossing, as well as province-wide at NSLCs from Yarmouth to Sydney. Congratulations to Coldstream Clear on the launch of NS Lager, and we hope to share more about the brewery and expanded offerings soon!

A bit of (good and beer related) news out of Spryfield, as Serpent Brewing has a limited release out now. Riff is a Belgian Table Beer that’s 5% ABV and has a very complex profile. Bringing some flavour of peach, field berry, white pepper and white tea, this features some good partnerships we need to highlight! First, the beer is created as a celebration for NovaFest, as NSCC students will be doing musical performances at the Serpent taproom every Tuesday night in May. The beer also features Peach White Tea from World Tea House, along with a blend of fieldberries as an addition to the beer. Lastly, the more standard beer ingredients feature a Belgian yeast from Ardenne to bring the white pepper notes, along with biscuit malt to have a nice, balanced backbone for the ale. There is a lot to chew on here and we can’t wait to try it. This is currently available on tap at the brewery for pints only (no growler fills) and this weekend there will be a small can release. The kitchen and patio will also be opening this weekend, so there’s even more reason to head to the brewery!

If you’re tied into the beer scene in the Annapolis Valley you might be aware that Annapolis Brewing picked up some fermentation vessels from the (sadly) defunct Bad Apple Brewhouse. What you might not know, however, is that the recipe and naming rights for BA’s classic West Coast IPA, Boxcutter, was also part of the deal. Not only that, but they’ve already gone ahead and put a batch together that’s available now! Although he wasn’t on-site for the brew, Bad Apple’s Jeff Saunders was heavily involved in the process of scaling the recipe to Annapolis’ system and ensuring that the water profile and ingredients were the same. That said, beer can vary from batch to batch even within the same brewery, so while it may not be exactly as you remember, it’s certainly made with the same spirit as the original! Coming in at 6.9% ABV, expect a resinous hop character with notes of pine and citrus paired with a balancing malt backbone. Fans of this beer were sad to see it disappear; you can find out why for yourself by visiting the Annapolis taproom in Annapolis Royal for a pint. You can also expect to see it appear in beer bars around the province and hopefully, in the future, at retail as well!

There may still be snowfall warnings in parts of Newfoundland, but there is new beer, too! Ninepenny Brewing out of St. John’s (more specifically CBS, as the locals would tell us!) has a new release in their hop series. The second release of their NPT Experimental IPA Series, M2 is a Voss Kviek IPA. This one is a big deal for the Ninepenny crew, as they’re calling it their haziest, juiciest and dankest beer, yet. Packed in the boil are Mosaic and Cascade hops, then Idaho 7 and Cryo Pop join the fray for some dry-hopping. This is the first time they’ve used any sort of Cryo hops and they’re thrilled with the result. The Cryo Pop blend is designed to bring a big dry-hopped punch of citrus and tropical and stone fruits. The beer has low bitterness and comes in at 4.7% to be juicy, hazy and enjoyable. This is canned and available now at the brewery and some local distribution in the coming week. There were only 90 flats of cans produced here, but it is also available for pints in the taproom.

Trailway Brewing news out of Saint John (still gotta get our heads around that), as Union House by Trailway has a new beer in cans and on top. Pipe Dream is a Session IPA that is brand new and inspired by Pipe Mania, the old video game. This is a dank, fruity and flavourful Session IPA that packs a lot into its 4.8% body. Fermented with Verdant yeast (a balanced yeast that brings a bit of body and highlights some apricot notes) and features a hop bill of Citra Cryo, Topaz and Idaho 7. This beer is clean, fruity and refreshing and is available now from the Saint John location, and of course their HQ in Fredericton.

Congratulations are in order to Lazy Bear Brewing of Smiths Cove, as they celebrate their Seventh Anniversary this month. Next Friday, May 19, they will be firing up their on-site pizza oven, and for the rest of the summer Firebox will be operating both Thursdays and Fridays. Lewis Hodsgon will be providing live music that evening, and of course, there will be great beer flowing! You will be able to try the new Coastal Light 4.0% lager, as well is their new 3.5% ABV Hard Ginger Ale. Oh, and their house-made gelato, too! And don’t forget that they attend the Annapolis Royal Farmers Market held every Saturday, with May 20 being the first of the outdoor markets for the year.

Scholarship alert! North Brewing is back with their Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship which includes $1500 renewable for up to 4 years plus guaranteed summer employment for the duration of their education. Presented and founded with Beer Diversity (and the wonderful Ren Navarro) and Change is Brewing Collective. If you know someone of age and interest, please pass this along to apply, as the deadline is July 31. This is incredibly important work and we need it to facilitate change within our society. Many students are not very familiar with the craft beer industry or the harassment and problems within it. Support North, support change and help spread the word on this important scholarship. We’ve got a short and sweet (but the cans are tall) update from Propeller Brewing, Tropic Haze is back. This is a summer ale that is now a staple in Prop’s seasonal rotation. Bringing big flavours in a refreshing summer ale, this wraps up flavours of mango, passionfruit and dragon fruit with a golden blonde and hazy package. Coming in at 5% and 473ml cans, this is available in the 3 Propeller shops, online for delivery, private stores in Halifax  and certain NSLCs. 

Before we end this week, we are compelled to remind our readers, and ourselves, that despite the many exclamations of “Good Job!”, “High Five!”, and “We Rock!” we all want to share, Beer is not yet for Everyone. After a particularly jarring and problematic session and interactions at this week’s Craft Brewers Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, there was a distinct lack of proactive support for those affected. Not to mention the choice to hold the conference in Tennessee, a state that is absolutely unwelcoming, sometimes dangerous, to the LGBT2S+ community. We encourage members of provincial and national brewery associations to reach out to their groups to see what they are doing to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. Canadian Craft Brewers Association. CBANS. CANB. NLCBA. PEICBA. (The fact that we cannot find a public link to the latter two is disturbing in its own right…)

Good Robot is leveraging their new facilities in Elmsdale to keep the new releases coming for Nova Scotia Craft Beer Month. Released last weekend was Raspberry Radler, a 4.0% pale beer chock-full of raspberry juice, a bit of a twist on the historic radlers made with lemon or grapefruit. Available now at their retail shops in Halifax (Robie Street) and Elmsdale, and coming to the NSLC. And debuting tomorrow is the first in their Tropical Storm series. This quartet of IPAs, all showcase tropical citrus and stone fruit flavours, across the ABV spectrum. Coming tomorrow is Tropical Storm Category 4. As the name implies, this is just 4.0% ABV, and features hops that lend a ripe citrus, guava, peach, and grape character, all in a tidy package. Available in cans and on tap Friday, look for three more Tropical Storm releases this month!

Port Rexton Brewing is having a full weekend of celebrations, with new beers, live music, and a pizza pop-up in their taproom. Let’s get you up to speed… As they have done since 2018, the Port Rexton crew invited the breweries who have opened over the past 12 months to join them in releasing a celebration of the New Wave of beer, with Next Generation. Next Generation 2023 is a collaboration with Banished Brewing who opened their doors in June 2022. Flexing their funky muscles, this is a Brett IPA, with plenty of citrus and floral notes from both the yeast and hops chosen in the brew. Medium bitterness, a dry finish, and 6.0% ABV. Cans and draught at both their taproom and St. John’s Retail Shop, as well as at Bar Brewdock and the Banished taproom (more on that in a second).

An exclusive for the Port Rexton taproom is a pair of Extra Special Bitters that are pouring right now. Why two ESBs, you ask? Well, one is Gluten Free! Yup! Always expanding their line of GF beers, having the same base recipe is a great way to check them out. PRBC is running a discount where you can try a 12 oz pour of both ESBs for one low price! (Or both the GF Bitter and the GF Porter on Nitro, if you are avoiding gluten altogether) And for those concerned, despite the name, these English-originating beers are not overly bitter, balancing malt and hops well. And if you time your visit to the taproom properly, you can enjoy a pop-up by Prohibition Pizza from 2 PM, and live music from Colin Harris from 7 PM.

Speaking of Banished Brewing, in addition to their retail and merchandise storefront, they have opened their Taproom this week! Open Wed and Thurs: 3 – 11 PM, Fri and Sat: 12 PM – 12 AM, and Sun: 11 AM – 7 PM. You can now grab a pint or flight of their offerings, fill a growler, and watch as the Brewing Team (aka Duncan) makes the magic happen! No kitchen onsite, but the head cheese tells us that food ordered in, or brought with you, is totally OK. Normal hours for this holiday weekend, so you can fill up before, and again after, family dinner!

Up in the Gut, Quidi Vidi has a new sour out with Peach Pineapple Ice Cream Sofa. Expect tons of tropical fruit flavour from additions of peach and pineapple, and some sweetness and a creamy mouthfeel (giving vanilla ice cream vibes) from a lactose addition.  You can find it now at the Hops Shop at the brewery and in Quidi Vidi’s online store. It will see wider distribution at NLC and other convenience stores soon.

Our final Newfoundland release of the week comes from Bannerman, who have a new blonde ale on the go. Minor Detail is a 4.5% ABV take on the style that starts with a grain bill of Pilsner and wheat malt. It then saw a dry-hop with a blend of German hops, before a final conditioning on green team, leading to notes of citrus and fresh herbs. Drop by the brewery on Duckworth Street to try Minor Detail now.

In cider news this week, Lake City has a brand new thang on the go that’s not quite a cider and not quite a wine. Riesling Sparkling Cider is a 9% ABV “vinous cider” where cider and wine were blended post-fermentation to produce a product with elements of both. It features floral aromas and citrus notes and a subtle green hue. Find it at the cidery where this weekend they’re also doing a special on flats: 20% off at $100 for 24 cans. Note that this is a pre-mixed flat containing 4 x Field of Dreams, 4 x Cranberry, 4 x Darkside Rose, 4 x Crisp Apple, 4 x Vanilla, and 4 x Darkside Dry. Free local delivery and Canada-wide shipping on this deal, too!

Halifax’s Propeller has a new twist on a previous beer this week with the release of Arcane X dry hopped sour. Like its older sibling, Arcane dry hopped sour, it’s a kettle soured beer where “hoppy and sour collide” in a tart and juicy beer. This time, however, it’s been hit with a “new and elusive” hop combination that should bring big notes of tropical fruit, peaches, and orange citrus. Find this 4.8% ABV thirst quencher at Prop shops, non-Bishop’s private stores in Halifax, and for online delivery. Also note that Propeller is open regular hours all weekend long for your beer-buying needs!

Around the corner, you’ll find 2 Crows Brewing on Brunswick Street. They have a pair of small batch beers to highlight this week. The first is Peel Out, a Weissbier (aka Hefeweizen), the original German wheat beer, brewed with an iconic yeast that is very banana-forward, with a hint of clove. Dreamed up by new-to-2C’s-Brew-Crew Everett, the mash went through a triple decoction to bring out melanoidin and caramel notes, with the wheat and yeast keeping the body crisp yet a hazy golden colour. As this was brewed on their pilot system, this 5.3% beaut is on tap only, and may not make it to the end of the weekend! 

And coming next Friday, April 14, is a fun beer that was initiated and brewed by the Front-Of-House crew Emily, Emily, Tessa, and Max back in early March. Gorgeous Gorgeous Beer is a lemon and lime Hopfenweisse, a hoppy and zesty take on a German Wheat. Using Citra and Motueka hops, and fresh lemon and lime juice and zest after the fact. As the bartenders had kicked the brewers out of the shop for the day, it’s only fair that they take over the serving, so 6 – 8 PM on the 14th, Jeremy and Miles will be slinging pints of GGB for all of you. Be sure to pop down to check out the fun!

A reminder that Big Spruce has taken over the taps at Battery Park today, with more than a dozen new beers on the go all day and night! Free cake for those there this evening at 7 PM. Check last week’s post for more info on what is pouring!

Next Thursday, April 13, Bar Stillwell is hosting the fine folks from Poincaré Chinatown, a good beer, wine, and food restaurant in Montreal. As they’ve done previously for fellow beer bar pals visiting from away, they’ve asked them to curate the tap and bottle list for the day. From 4 PM, look for taps from Ayawan, L’Apothicaire, Les Grand Bois, Mellon, Messorem, and Silo. If most of those are new to you (too), then you’ll definitely want to pop down!

Lunns Mill Beer is embracing Nova Scotia Craft Beer Month with free delivery to the HRM, and Annapolis and Kings Counties for all of April. Just be sure to submit your order before 10 PM Wednesday to receive your beer that week. Hopefully more breweries will keep up the NSCBM celebrations!

Fridays usually mean the release of one of your favourite IPAs or DIPAs at Unfiltered, but this week they are delving back into the German styles with a new batch of Hellevator. This 7% ABV Helles Bock, showcasing German malts and noble hops, is available now in cans and on-tap next door at Charm School.

Capping off the week is a new version of Upstreet’s Neon Friday. This 6.5% ABV New England IPA is full of lovely tropical, citrus, and pine, thanks to the generous additions of Citra, Idaho 7, Mosaic, and Strata hops. Available now at their taproom as well as Craft Beer Corner in downtown Charlottetown, it may be hitting the shelves and taps elsewhere before too long. And good news, normal hours of operation at both of their spots all holiday weekend long!

If you’re in the Charlottetown region and are interested in a beer-adjacent career change, drop by Hopyard’s downtown location this Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, with resume in hand. Team members will be onsite to talk about opportunities to join their team.
