• The inaugural brew at Uncle Leo’s Brewery in Pictou took place this week, by brewer Karl Whiffen and Greg Nash (of Hart & Thistle and Rockbottom). It is their signature Red Ale, and it will be released by the end of the month. Expect a full profile on Uncle Leo’s soon (including info on who Uncle Leo was). Welcome to the Atlantic Canada beer landscape!

• The PEI Brewing Company is releasing a new beer, a Belgian Saison, called Lobster Ale. Conceived to celebrate PEI fisheries, it was brewed with the idea of being paired with lobster dinners and other rich foods. According to Bryan Carver, head brewer, the beer contains a mash of malted barley, wheat and oats, with kettle additions of European noble hops, refined sugar, and lemon peel. The juice from the lemons was added to the beer during conditioning. A very small amount of lobster shell was also added, prior to fermentation with a Saison yeast. The beer has been tested for allergen compounds, and none were detected; however, those concerned with an allergic reaction should still “err on the side of caution”. Coming in at 6.5% ABV, Lobster Ale will be available at the PEI Brewing Co. on tap and in bottles; the bottles will also be available at several PEILCC stores across the province.

Sea Level Brewing has released a new seasonal, their Summer Blonde Pilsner. It uses 100% Pilsner malt, and its namesake, a Southern Hemisphere hop, Summer. The beer was fermented using an authentic Czech Pilsner yeast. It clocks in at 4.8% ABV, and has a crisp, refreshing taste. It is currently available on tap and in cans & 1L growlers at the Port Pub. It will be at  Harvest Wines and Cristall Wine Merchants today, and Bishop’s Cellar next week.

Garrison Brewing has released a limited run of a new beer, American Red. Clocking in at 6% ABV and 47 IBUs, it is only available at the brewery for growler fills. Think of it as a cross between the Irish Red and Imperial Pale Ale.

• The Pump House has a new beer available, a Hefeweizen. For those of you not familiar, Weizen is a German wheat beer, and can be served mit hefe (with yeast) or krystal (bright, or clear). It is a beer with very low hopping rates, best drunk fresh, and is quite delicate, as the yeast will create very different aromas depending on the fermentation temperature, with some beer smelling like bananas, and others like cloves. Pump House’s beer clocks in at 5% ABV, and is only available on tap at the restaurant.

• More details on last week’s release of Big Spruce’s Regatta Red, from brewer Jeremy White: The beer is loaded with Munich and Caramel 60, with some Roast and Chocolate malts, and clocks in at 5.0% ABV. The beer has 22 IBUs, is unfiltered, and, like all of their other beers, is 100% farm fresh and certified organic. It will be available throughout the summer (they’ve brewed it three times already), in growlers and on tap in Cape Breton only.

Halifax Seaport Beerfest tickets are now on sale at most NSLC locations in the HRM, for all of the three sessions (Friday, Aug 9, 7-9:30pm, Saturday, Aug 10, 2-4:30pm and 7-9:30pm). Tickets are also available online through Ticket Atlantic. We will announce breweries and beers when available. One major difference is that this year’s event will be held in the Cunard Centre at Pier 23, all inside. So no worrying about rain getting in your beer. 🙂

The Atlantic Beer Festival is taking place at the Moncton Coliseum this Saturday. There are two sessions: 2:30-5pm, and 7:30-10pm. Tickets are available at the Coliseum Box Office, The Pump House Brewery or BarnYard BBQ, and online at tickets.moncton.ca. The evening session is sold out, however there are lots of tickets still available for the afternoon session. The Beer Fest is partnering with the SPCA and United Way.

Exact details on the beers and breweries are not published online (check the Times & Transcript on Thursday for a full list), but I give you some highlights from the organizers and brewers I’ve contacted.

– Fresh off a CBA medal earlier this month, Acadie-Broue will be there with their Gaboteuse Belgian IPA. However, it will only be at the Afternoon Session, that’s worth buying a ticket for the session alone!

Shiretown from Charlo, NB will be there, pouring their Blonde du Quai, Big Brown Ale and a one off RodDog’s Amber Ale. Also only there for the afternoon session, I see a trend!

Le Troue du Diable from Shawinagan, QC will be returning, with a pair of beers, that are always hits with the craft beer fans.

– Local (and almost local) breweries Pump House, Picaroons, Big Tide, Garrison and Propeller will also be there, with some special casks and one-off beers that will not be available anywhere else.

– There will be a Maine pavillion, showcasing a over dozen beer that are not available at the ANBL.

We will post the final beer list as soon as it’s available. We expect to see over 140 beers, 30% of which are new offerings not usually available in NB. Some will be launched at the Fest, so this will be your first chance to try them.

In addition to the beer, there will be food vendors (pretzels!), with a BBQ/Smoking station set up with pulled pork and sausages. There will be music by Carey Beck and the 60 LPs. Free shuttle buses leave from the Coliseum to various spots around the city (Downtown, Riverview, etc), so be sure to take advantage and don’t drink and drive!

There is a VIP option at each of the sessions: you will start at the Pump House Brewpub, and meet your guide for the session, Mirella Amato. She is the only Master Cicerone[TM] in Canada, and will be helping folks get the most out of the Beer Festival. After some appetizers and a limo ride to the Coliseum, Mirella will bring you in the VIP entrance and then spend some time tasting some of the great beer available. She will highlight a few of the best beers, do a guided tasting at several of the difference booths, and assist you in hunting down the best beers for your favourites styles. To sign up, contact the ANBL. The ticket price is $99, and that includes your Festival ticket.

We’ll be there, and hope you will too! Cheers!

– Tomorrow, May 4th, Picaroons will be hosting a tap-takeover at Plan B Bar & Lounge in Moncton. For this “May the 4th Be With You” event, the six taps will include Dark & Stormy Night, Dooryard, Best Bitter, Timber Hog, Yippee IPA, and Feelsgood Imperial Pilsner; the band Gravity Strike will also be providing live music. Tickets are $10, and the event starts at 10:00 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Picaroons is releasing a special beer named JED IPA. This beer is their Yippee IPA “insanely dry-hopped with Galaxy, Comet, Aurora, Delta, Apollo, and Phoenix hops”, according to Dennis Goodwin, Marketing Director at Picaroons. JED IPA will be available exclusively at the Picaroons Brewtique in growlers only, and also on tap at Plan B Saturday night.

– The Pump House Brewery has released two more of their seasonal beers in bottles, just in time for the warm weather! The Maple Ale, at 5% ABV, is described as an amber-colored beer with an aroma that is slightly sweet, yet with a hint of Columbus hops in the background. The taste shows off the maple character, as the beer is “allowed to age upon an ample quantity of pure maple syrup, sourced from locally tapped sugar maple trees”. The second beer is their Braunschweig Wicked Wheat (Braunschweig is the German word for “Brunswick”). Also at 5% ABV, this beer sounds like it’s along the lines of a Hefeweizen, with a golden color, and aromas and flavors of banana and clove. Look for these beers at various ANBL stores across New Brunswick.

Big Spruce Brewing in Nyanza Cape Breton is having a busy time these days, brewing often to keep up with demand in Cape Breton, Halifax, and locations in between. They are looking for a summer student to run their sales counter four days a week, to help move their growlers and merchandise. If you are over 19 and interested, email bigsprucebrewing@gmail.com.

They also have lots of certified organic hop rhizomes available (they grow and use their own hops whenever possible), email them for details. Jeremy will be happy to give you a crash course on growing hops at home!

– Hell Bay Brewing is continuing their move to a bigger and better location, and will be selling out of their Liverpool location (38 Legion St) this weekend (Fri-Sun, 12-6pm each day). They will be having a Grand Opening mid-June to celebrate their move, and we will keep you up-to-date with the details. Congratulations to Hell Bay on their continued success!

– Propeller Brewing is releasing their newest One Hit Wonder beer today. The style is an Imperial Red Ale, and unfortunately is only available in growlers at the brewery on Gottingen. Also, local drinks writer Craig Pinhey has details on Propeller’s expansion into Dartmouth in the latest edition of Taps Magazine.

Garrison Brewing is also going through a major expansion in downtown Halifax, and we hope to give you some details on this soon. In the meantime, their much-anticipated Sugar Moon Maple beer is being released today at the brewery, and at Premier Wine and Spirits and Bishop’s Cellar this weekend. It will also be available at the ANBL shortly.

– Tickets for the afternoon session of the Atlantic Beer Festival in Moncton on May 25th are still available. Breweries from all over the Maritimes, Quebec, Ontario and Maine will be in attendance. We hope to have the brewery and beer list for you soon.

– It’s not for several months, but the Seaport Beer Festival has put out their call for volunteers. The festival is taking place in Halifax August 9-10, and volunteer spots fill up early, so contact them for more details.
