I normally keep the content on this blog to the local scene but when someone from Slovenia reaches out to me I’m ready to do a post.  Matej Pelicon, the Head Brewer for Pelicon Brewery, recently sent me the following email.  Whenever you’re in Ajdovščina (sounds like Out-of-China), on the West side of Slovenia, be sure to check them out.

Hello fellow craft beer lovers,

I’m Matej from Slovenia, a homebrewer, beer lover and beer writer for Vino (wine) magazine. As winemaking is common in Slovenia, craft breweries seem not to follow this trend despite having one of the best hops in the world. You might heard about Styrian Golding, rumor has it monks at infamous Westvleteren use it in their beers.

I decided to start a craft brewery to spread the word about craft beer under family name Pelicon. My team of young talents from different professions and I launched a project on Kickstarter to crowdfund part of startup cost. Accidentally we became the first brewery in Europe who did this.

The following is a press release that has just been added to the Garrison Brewing website regarding the 2013 Brew-Off Challenge:

HALIFAX, N.S. – Dec. 11, 2012 – Once again this winter, Garrison will host the Home Brew-off Challenge, a contest designed to showcase the talents of Maritime homebrewers. This is Garrison’s 5th annual Brew-Off contest in conjunction with urban winery Noble Grape. It’s the only annual Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) event in the Maritimes.

This year’s style to brew is a Belgian Blonde Ale: moderate strength golden ale with subtle Belgian complexity, slightly sweet flavour, and dry finish.

The winning entry in 2012 was submitted by Lunenberg native Kellye Robertson. Her winning brew, Citra and the Rye, a bold and hoppy take on a medium-bodied ale brewed with rye malt, will be released at the gala in March 2013 and be available for purchase at the brewery and select private stores. Pump House Brewery will be releasing a special edition Doppelbock to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its bottling plant.  Friday, December 7th at 5pm they will be tapping a Ferkin Keg of the brew and a bottled version of the beer will be available on ANBL shelves before Christmas for a limited time.  The beer is described as follows:

The Doppelbock has 18.4% OE, a FE of 2.0%, which gives an alcohol content of 9% Vol.%.

The colour is a very dark brown with a reddish tint, the foam is beige, thick and long lasting.

The phenolic taste from the high alcohol content is barely noticeable, an intense maltiness, which is accompanied by a pleasant dark chocolate taste, ties it all together.

Hop bitterness is noticeable but not overpowering, as there is already enough bitterness from the dark malts.  A hint of citrussy hop aroma rounds the taste up.

This beer harmonizes very well with hearty food like stews and game, but is also a good companion to sweet desserts like chocolate mousse or Creme Bavaroise.
