Happy IPA Day, everyone! This now-annual “national beer holiday” celebrates what is arguably North America’s favorite beer style (by craft beer lovers, anyway). It was founded in 2011, and over a short time has already become a much-anticipated day of summer. Breweries and beer bars all over the world hold events and release special beers to celebrate the India Pale Ale, whether it be American, English, Imperial, Black, White, Red… and so on. Ashley Routson (@TheBeerWench on Twitter), one of the founders of IPA Day, explains what you can do to share your IPA love:

“On August 1, share your photos, videos, blog posts, tasting notes, recipes and thoughts on IPA with the world. Be sure to tag your posts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+ and other social media platforms with the #IPAday hashtag.”

Meanwhile, here’s  what’s planned for today by a few participating breweries in Atlantic Canada:

• Would Greg Nash miss IPA Day? He’s brewed up something special that will be pouring at the Rockbottom in Halifax: Oak-Aged Double Hoppelganger. This DIPA has an ABV of 10% and a calculated IBUs of 305, with tons of Summit, Chinook, Centennial, and Magnum hops. As expected, no growler fills on this bad boy.

• And, moving on, Nash also brewed up something hoppy for the Hart & Thistle. Toning it down to 7% ABV, the Old 87 (an American IPA) has about 50 IBUs and showcases lots of Columbus and Falconer’s Flight hops, heavy in both flameout and dry-hop additions.

• Off the mainland, the PEI Brewing Co. will be showcasing the IPA all day at their brewery in Charlottetown. Their original 1772 will be available on tap and in bottles, of course, but the brewers have also concocted two cask versions to serve to Islanders looking for more of a hop fix.

We’ll be enjoying several IPAs later today… don’t let us be the only ones! Prepare your palates for some shredding, and celebrate the wonderful world of hops.

Howdy, craft beer drinkers! Here’s some beer-related news to cool you off at the end of the week…

– It’s been a long-time coming, but after a soft launch at the PEI Beer Festival in September of 2011, Barnone Brewery (located in Rose Valley, PEI) finally has their beer available for the public! They have two beers  currently on tap at The Landing Oyster House and Pub in Tyne Valley. Their “Pale Ale” is an American Pale Ale, and “Summer Sessions” could be described as an American Wheat. Both beers should be on tap at other locations on PEI soon, and the brewery should hopefully be filling growlers in the not-too-distant future. Head over to the full story on the PEIBeerGuy blog for more info.

– Missed the Picaroons Brewer’s Bash last Saturday in Fredericton? Well, your chances to try some of the 300 beers featured may not be completely gone – apparently the ANBL will be selling the “leftovers” from the festival at four of their stores (York St. and Prospect St. in Fredericton, Vaughan Harvery Blvd. in Moncton, and the Quispamsis location). Details aren’t great yet, but stay tuned to the ANBL website and Brewer’s Bash Facebook page… beers should hopefully be in stores by early next week.

– Looking for another tasty Greg Nash creation? The Hart & Thistle tapped Hoplessness yesterday – a hybrid Witbier/IPA (aka White IPA) that is low in bitterness (5 IBUs), but high in hop aroma due to a large addition at the end of the boil. Clocking in at 6% ABV, and brewed with curacao orange peel and coriander spices in the traditional Witbier fashion, it sounds like a great summer beer!

– If you’re in the Moncton/Dieppe area and were hoping to find some more Celtic Knot beer, Marky’s has recently tapped another keg of the Hopicide. The Not Joe Average Pale Ale should also be on tap again sometime in the near future.

– For those of you in PEI needing some local craft beer in large amounts, PEI Brewing Company is now renting kegs of all their beers. Kegs are available in one of three sizes: 19 L, 30 L, and 50 L, and can be picked up at their new retail space on Kensington Rd, in Charlottetown. Call ahead to make your order.

Boxing Rock Brewing continues to expand, as their beers will become available in Halifax starting this weekend. Their Temptation Red Ale will be the first beer out for purchase; Haligonians should expect to see the Hunky Dory Pale Ale the following week, and then the Vicar’s Cross DIPA another week later. Look for their beers at Premier Wine & Spirits, Harvest Wines, Bishop’s Landing, and Cristall Wine, with the NSLC following soon.

Bridge Brewing Company has announced that they will be selling their beer in 750 mL growlers at the Historic Farmers’ Market in Halifax every Saturday. Which beer(s) will be available will depend on what is leftover from the previous day’s sales at the brewery; T-shirts and glasses will also be available for purchase.

That’s all for this week. ACBBChris is away on vacation for several weeks, so don’t be surprised if the quantity (and quality!) of posts drops during that period. Have fun, Chris!

Hello again, guys and gals! Here’s your Atlantic Canadian Beer news for this week, to carry into your long weekend…

• For those of you who have been anxiously waiting to try some beer from Grimross Brewing, we have good news: your wait is almost over! Owner/brewer Stephen Dixon has confirmed that the first beer, a Belgian Saison named “Cheval D’Or”, will be released sometime over the next week or so. A dry, light-gold-colored ale described as rustic, earthy, and slightly spicy, Cheval D’Or has an ABV of approximately 5.2%. The beer will be available in 750 mL refillable growlers at the Picaroons Brewtique downtown, and will also be released in kegs to various restaurants/bars across the city.

• After a successful launch of their first beer at Marky’s Laundromat last Sunday, Celtic Knot Brewing will be releasing another beer this coming Sunday, June 30th. The “Not Joe Average” is a 5% American Pale Ale that brewer Bruce Barton designed “to appeal to both craft beer lovers and non-craft beer lovers alike”. The launch will again be at Marky’s, and begins at 3:00 p.m.

Uncle Leo’s Brewery in Lyons Brook (two kilometres outside of Pictou, NS, along the West River) is having its Gran Opening this weekend! Saturday from 2-9pm and Sunday from 2-6pm, the brewery will be open, serving samples of their IPA and Red Ale, as well as selling growlers to go. A bonus for those who drop by, the growler fee will be waived for this weekend only, and you’ll receive a free glass with a fill! We will have a full profile of them soon. Welcome to the Atlantic Craft Beer Revolution!

Garrison Brewing has announced that two more of their beers will soon be available in New Brunswick. The first beer is Nit-Wit, a Belgian Witbier (the perfect summer-style!) that was originally the winning entry for the 2010 Ultimate Brew-Off, brewed by Scott Tilford. The beer has since been brewed repeatedly by Garrison, and has won medals in both the 2011 and 2012 Canadian Brewing Awards (Bronze and Silver, respectively). The next beer is Garrison’s second in their “One-Hop” series, Citra One-Hop IPA. This American IPA has 56 IBUs, and is brewed solely with the Citra hop, well-known for packing in lots of tropical fruit flavors and aromas. The Nit-Wit is now available at ANBL locations across the province; look for the Citra One-Hop sometime over the next week.

• Residents of Charlottetown can now pick up PEI Brewing Company beers at the Farmer’s Market on Belvedere Ave. The brewery will be selling 4-packs of their bottled beers, pre-filled growlers, and some merchandise such as shirts, hats, etc. every Wednesday and Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.

• The Rare Bird Pub in Guysborough, NS is opening today for the summer season. The brewpub is home to the Authentic Seacoast™ Brewery, and will have several of the in-house crafted beers on tap. Growlers of the beer are also available at the Skipping Stone Cafe next door.

• The next event from the Ladies Beer League has been announced. It will be held at the at The Wooden Monkey Restaurant in Dartmouth on July 11th from 7-9 pm, and will feature Cape Breton brewery Big Spruce Brewing. Tickets cost $15.00 and include 2 slices of pizza from the Wooden Monkey kitchen & 3 beer samples (including that of Regatta Red, which is not available outside of Cape Breton). Tickets are moving fast, so please contact LadiesBeerLeague@gmail.com to reserve your spot.

Have a fun and safe Canada Day everyone! Get out and drink local!
