The Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference kicks off in Halifax today, and unfortunately, does so under the shadow of the immense forest fires affecting thousands of Nova Scotians. Like many of you, we have friends and family affected by the fires and emergency evacuations, and understand beer is much lower on the priority list for many! If you are able to assist through donations to Red Cross and United Way, who are assisting those seeking food and shelter and other necessities, and when it is time to rebuild. North Brewing is donating 15% of draught sales until Sunday, as well as a drop point for necessary items for displaced people. Read more here. You can also do your part by doing nothing… Now is not the time to get out and enjoy a hike and a beer in our forested lands! Pause those activities until it is safe to do so. Let’s get you up to speed with the events and new beers that those in Halifax, and beyond, can enjoy in the days to come.

As mentioned, the Canadian Brewing Awards are taking place in downtown Halifax today until Saturday, and while a ticket is required to attend talks, check out the Exhibition Floor, or attend the Awards Gala Saturday night, there are plenty of events happening around Halifax to celebrate the increased eyes on the region’s beer scene. Here are but a few events that we know about, but you’ll be doing yourself a favour by checking Social Media to avoid disappointment, just in case your favourite taproom is closed for an event! 

Propeller Brewing and Tatamagouche got together for a pair of home-and-home collaborations at their respective breweries in May, and are releasing them today in a big bash at Prop’s Gottingen Street tap room. When the Tata crew came to the big city, they brewed Twin Shores Collaboration Ale, a 4.5% Pale Ale featuring Nectaron and Vic Secret hops, for a double dose of passion fruit, peach, and pineapple. Using a cold fermentation temp kept the beer crisp and clean. In addition to the draught for today’s event, cans of Twin Shores are also available now. Prop will have a half-dozen more beer on tap, a collection of newer releases, complemented by seven from TataBrew, who will be offering a sneak peak of the soon-to-come Kudos.

When the Propeller Team visited Main Street Tatamagouche, they opted to get a little funky, using Sacc Brux Trois to ferment the Nectaron-hopped Pale Ale. The yeast itself gives off plenty of fruity aromas, only enhancing the hop choice. While visitors today (like, right now!) will be able to try Kudos in advance of its full can release in the coming weeks. Also on tap from Tata is the Bishops Cellar collab Cellar Slammer, Dekorum Lime, Apres Cream Ale, Saltwater Cowboy Gose, Deception Bay IPA, and Baltic Porter. And if you time it just right, you’ll be able to enjoy food from Humble Pie Kitchen, who are on-site from 3 PM until sell out. 

Not on tap at Propeller today, but available wherever Tata beer is sold, is the newest entry to their Dekorum line, Dekorum Gold. After Brewer Chad Ellis tasted Horton Ridge Malt’s Vienna malt recently, he knew that it would make a great base for a “maltier light lager”, and pictured it as the next Dekorum. Using that Vienna malt, with just a touch of Dextrin for a bit more body, malt, and “oomph”, it was lightly hopped in the mash and then whirlpool with Strisselspalt and Spalter Select, respectively, before fermentation with Isar Lager from Escarpment Labs (plenty from them later in the blog!). After several weeks of cool fermentation and conditioning, small cans of this super crispy beer with a light toasty note are available now at Tata’s shop and taproom on Main Street, as well as select retailers in the province, including their online shop.

Another event is being hosted today by BrewCulture at the Gahan House Nova Centre location, adjacent to the CBAC, and is sure to appeal to the yeast nerds in the audience. Dr. Chris White, of White Labs, will be in attendance 4 – 6 PM to chat all things yeast, and to toast the release of Thiol City IPA, a collaboration brew featuring WLP077 Tropicale Yeast Blend. And after the Conference tomorrow, BrewCulture is hosting a party at the Propeller Gottingen Street taproom and Arcade, learn more and RSVP here.

Among the collaborations Stefan Gagliardi of BrewCulture undertook recently is Born to be Mild, with Antigonish’s Candid Brewing. This lower alcohol Mild Ale was fermented with White Labs’ London Ale Yeast, expressing some subtle esters of oak, and enhancing the light toast and coffee notes from the malts. Available now on draught and in cans wherever you enjoy being Candid.

And for those folks in town to attend the Conference, the fine folks at Anton-Paar are in attendance, and will have some working instruments at Booth 117 on the Exhibition floor. So if you’re looking for information on Dissolved Oxygen (bad!), Alcohol testing (good!), and CO2/Carbonation level (depends!), bring in your cans and bottles, and Tim and Co will let you know what you’ve got on the go!

It wouldn’t be a big week of beer in Halifax if 2 Crows didn’t torture us at ACBeerBlog with more of everything. True to form, they’re kicking off the CBAC weekend tomorrow, June 2nd, from 4pm ‘til close with a special tap takeover. Featuring beers made in collaboration with PEI’s Shoreline Malting and Guelph’s Escarpment Labs, 10 new tipples are slated to be on tap at the 2C taproom on Brunswick Street. We told you last week about 2C’s new Green World DIPA, which features 100% Maritime-grown ingredients including the aforementioned Shoreline malt and hops from Lakeview Hops in Harvey Station, NB. Also from the home brewery is Guv, an English mild that started with Shoreline Pale, with some amber and black malts capping the mash for color and a bit of toasty bread crust and drying roast, respectively, and some brewer’s caramel. It was hopped in the boil with Goldings from Southan Farms and fermented with Escarpment’s House strain. Bready and creamy, they’ll have it on the nitro tap as well for a real treat in terms of mouthfeel. Rounding out the 2C contribution is Racy, which is part beer, part kekfrancos piquette. The kekfrancos skins came from frequent 2C collaborators Lightfoot & Wolfville and the beer side is essentially AC Light Lager, but you probably wouldn’t recognize it as such, as it’s got plenty of winey depth and spritz from the piquette side. You’ll also find Saison du Chardonnay from North Brewing pouring from bottles, Shore, a pseudo-lager from Lone Oak that leverages the Escarpment Krispy Kveik strain, and If you Don’t Stop, a hazy NE-style IPA from Tide & Boar. Given the capricious nature of our provincial regulatory overlords at NSLC, the realities of shipping beer across the country in a post-pandemic world, and the added complications of our local wildfire problem, the rest of the beers are a little bit tentative, but we can tell you that you might run into additional offerings from Burdock, Indie Alehouse, Merit Brewing, Banished Brewing, and Escarpment themselves! The only way to find out for sure is to head over on Friday evening!

For those who are thirsty now and don’t want to wait until tomorrow, 2 Crows has brought back their collaborative and charitable radler, The Agenda. Version 2.0 features a light lager base, with the addition of tangerine and peach puree. Using a touch of agave nectar for a hint of sweetness, this juicy hybrid is fresh, easy drinking, and just 2.0% ABV! This is only available on tap during the month of June, and will see 100% of the sales donated to Halifax Sexual Health Centre, a non-judgemental non-profit giving back to folkx in the Halifax region since 1970, especially embracing the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Back in Halifax, Garrison has two new releases this week starting off with the newest version of their Pucker Up! Series, Citrus. This 4.9% ABV kettle sour starts of with 2-row and wheat malt before seeing additions of flavoured green tea and stevia. Expect notes of orange, lemon, grapefruit and lime, with a hint of vanilla, and a tart finish. Next up is this year’s version of SMASH, a beer made with one type of malt and one variety of hops, in this case 2-row malt and Sasquatch hops. Coming in at 5% ABV, and brewed in the American Pale Ale style, expect \ woodsy and citrusy notes from the hops along with some dankness. They’re both available now at both Garrison locations, on tap and in cans, with SMASH also seeing distribution at the private stores in HRM.

This week’s last release comes to you from Sydney, where Island Folk is rolling out Blowing Raspberries, featuring notes of raspberry and rose water. Bottles of the 5.4% ABV cider are available now at the cider house and through their online store. The name for this one stemmed from a partnership with the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia, that saw Island Folk run a competition for short stories or poems that reflect the unique personality of the cidery and the flavours of this new cider. Hannah Vincent, a writer from Truro, took the prize with a poem titled Blowing Raspberries and a new cider name was born.

Not all of the fun is in Halifax this weekend, as Landwash in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland is holding a Cask Festival Saturday at noon. Inviting in breweries and cideries from across the island (Banished, Bannerman, Bootleg, Dildo, Port Rexton, Rough Waters, and Mauzy Cider), they will have plenty of tasty and unique casks a-pouring this weekend, including something a bit crazy with Skittles! You’ll have to pop by to check it out!

And for those in Fredericton, TrailWay Brewing is celebrating their Seventh Anniversary on Main Street with their annual Block Party! Live music, Food Trucks, face painting for the kids (and adults, we hope!), and of course great beer (look out for some tasty beer slushies)! The party kicks off at 11 AM and runs all afternoon and evening, with live music kicking off at noon. More details on the line-up here!

We’ll leave you with a few final newsbites, starting in Fredericton where Grimross is releasing its cult-favourite Praha bohemian lager for another summer run. This one packs lots of herbal hop character and bitterness into a sessional 3.8% ABV package. Short cans are available now at the brewery. 

Sticking with short cans, Halifax’s Bishop Cellar is stocking an exclusive 6-pack of Tatamagouche Brewing’s Dekorum lager, featuring 2 each of the lime, mandarin and unfruited versions. And while you’re there, be sure to grab some cans of the aforementioned Twin Shores Pale Ale collab with Propeller and this year’s edition of Cellar Slammer

Unfortunately, as we began the post today, we must also end with sad news of the fires currently burning in Nova Scotia. While not in the most affected area of the province, The Harbour Brewing in Musquodoboit Harbour shared some video and pictures of their storage and expansion gear affected by a fire a couple of days ago. As they sift through the debris, we can help them by purchasing their beer where available, and maybe even making a trip to their taproom/retail spot on Highway 7, to purchase their beer and merch.

Welp, let’s get this out of the way. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you and yours. While today is a fine day to drink a well-made local stout, we figure any type of beer, cider, or mead will be just perfect to toast the patron saint of Ireland. Plenty of new beers hitting the taps and shelves this week, with local breweries and cideries celebrating the date with live music and events too. So grab a lunch-time beer and read what you can soon be enjoying at your favourite watering hole.

There’s a new beer on tap for pints and growlers at North Grant’s Half Cocked Brewing, perfect for kicking off your weekend celebrations. Jughead is an 8.2% Double IPA, featuring plenty of Simcoe hops in the boil and after. But don’t be scared away, the bitterness is not too high, as aroma and flavour are first and foremost in the beer. Pine and citrus are the order of the day, and clarity in the golden-amber beer is what you’ll spot in the glass. Pop out today, and you’ll also be able to enjoy some holiday food pairings from The Crafty Cooks, the food truck set up steps from Half Cocked’s front door. And for those unlucky enough to not be in the area, fingers crossed that there may be some kegs heading into the big city before too long.

Moncton’s Happy Brewing has a new beer pouring this week, something light and easy drinking, for those who want to enjoy more than a couple this weekend. Flowers is a 4.7% Light Lager, crisp, light, but with craft beer roots and flavour. Using Pilsner malt, as well as flaked rice to keep the mouthfeel nice and crushable, it features a nice dosing of Motueka hops to impart some floral notes with a hint of green apple. Pop by their spot on Main Street for a taste this weekend!

In anticipation of the East Coast Music Awards coming to Halifax May 3-7, the Craft Beer Collective sponsors of the event (Breton Brewing, Garrison, Grimross, Quidi Vidi, and Upstreet), have released this year’s beer, EMCAle, Track 3: Halifax. Brewed at Halifax’s Garrison Brewing, this 4.5% Wheat Ale is hazy as it was not filtered, and features german Hallertauer hops to enhance the grain bill, for a fruity nose and just slight bitterness. Easy drinking in quantity, which is perfect, as the sale of each can will see $0.50 donated to the ECMA to continue to showcase and grow the region’s music community and industry. Find it at Garrison’s locations today, as well as provincial and private stores in the province, with roll out to the other provincial liquor stores in the coming weeks. And better yet, it will be available at all of the venues during the May live music events throughout Halifax!

Back in Nouveau-Brunswick, Trailway celebrated a big milestone last weekend with the opening of their Saint John location, Union House. If you’re in town, let us know how those tasty-looking smash burgers are hitting. The new location isn’t slowing them down from new releases, with two new ones to tell you about this week. First up is the newest addition to the Hu Jon family, Hu Jon Ultra. Fans of low-ABV beers are in for a treat, with this super-session IPA coming in at 1.5% ABV, but still bringing the big hop-forward aromas and flavours you’ve come to expect from Hu Jon. If you’re looking for something with a more traditional ABV, check out their second new release, Touching Base. Originally brewed for last weekend’s Freddy Craft Beer Fest, this one uses the experimental HBC 1019 hop which brings big peach and stone fruit notes and comes in at 5.6% ABV. Cans of both releases are available now at the brewery and through their online store. 

Originating in PEI, the Gahan House brand has spread across Atlantic Canada with locations in all four provinces. Gahan is taking advantage of that scale in their new Gahan House Seasonals series, which will feature small batch beers available only at their restaurants/taprooms. First up is Simcoe IPA, a 6.1% ale brewed out of the Nova Centre location in Halifax. Look for notes of tropical fruit, peaches and pine notes from the Simcoe, Centennial and Columbus hops. This one is on-tap or available in cans to-go from all Gahan locations. 

Up next is a taste of ‘The Good Life’ in Tatamagouche with the release of Dolce Vita. This one started as a Belgian-style saison that underwent a mixed-fermentation before aging in Pinot Noir barrels. Expect an effervescent carbonation from the complex fermentation, with vinous notes from the barrel and pear, honeydew and earthy aromas. The oak barrels also lend some vanilla and almond flavour to the 7.3% ABV saison. 500 ml bottles are available now at the brewery and through their online store. 

We’ve mentioned Phantasm a few times over the last year. This new product is made from NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc grape skins and releases Thiol precursors in a beer which can then be “unlocked” by particular yeast strains to allow way more tropical and fruity notes to make their way from the glass to your nose. Tusket Falls Brewing has an interesting experiment on the go with two versions of their Next Phaze IPA. Both beers use the same yeast and hop additions, with Idaho 7 in the mash, a Citra whirlpool addition, and a Riwaka dry-hop. The version released two weeks ago stops there, but their newest release was also brewed with Phantasm, presenting an opportunity to try both alongside each other to get a feel for what those extra Thiols can do in a beer. Coming in at 6.4% ABV, both versions are available on tap and in cans at the Halifax and Tusket locations now. 

A quick hit from Antigonish’s Candid Brewing, as they’re getting into the mood with an Irish Red Ale. Sociable is 4.8%, pours a deep red with an off-white head, and is easy-drinking, ready for many raises of the glass this weekend at their College Street taproom.

Hot on the heels of Larger Than Larry, the special batch of Lawrencetown Surf Session Ale brewed up by North Brewing with Team Stillwell for North’s 10th Birthday Party at Stilly HQ, comes another version of Larry, this one more of a junior to LtL’s senior. Lawrencetown Skate Session Ale is a little lighter than regular Lawrencetown, coming in a 4.0% ABV, and features some different hop varieties that yield a floral and fruity vibe in a still-hazy package. Intended to be a perfect après skate beer, this one is being released to benefit the Lawrencetown Skatepark Project, a grassroots effort to get a skatepark built in Lawrencetown Beach. While $0.50 from every can sold will go towards this initiative, North is also getting behind this event in a bigger way by hosting a launch party for the beer on Monday, March 20th, from 6 – 10pm at their Portland Street taproom. No tickets are required, but donations will be accepted and will result in an entry for a sweet doorprize.

Just one job to tell you about this week, as Lone Oak is looking to expand their team in Borden-Carleton. With more fermenters on the way, they need some help filling them, and then emptying them, which is where you come in! They are hiring a Brewer to work with Spencer and the gang, as well as a Packaging Technician, as well as a Delivery and Warehouse Assistant. Could this be our last weekend of winter? It just might be! The clocks change again soon, we’re in the midst of a snowy weekend and it will be March Break before you know it. Are we always talking about the weather? Sometimes! But let’s start talking about the wonderful beer and news from across our region! Let’s kick it off with a few releases celebrating International Women’s Day 2023, which is being marked next Wednesday.

Let’s start our day in Fredericton, where Trailway Brewing is celebrating IWD2023 with the release of Physica Raspberry Cream IPA. Named after the text written by Hildegard Von Bingen in the 12th century, she is thought to be the first to add hops to beer (much more on Von Bingen and Physica in this article). Walking in Von Bingen’s, and the thousands of women instrumental in the evolution of beer over the centuries, steel-toed rubber boots are the women of Trailway who designed, produced, and packaged Physica. Using plenty of hops (namely El Dorado and Mosaic), the IPA was conditioned on Raspberry, giving it plenty of fruit, light sweetness, and a lovely creamy mouthfeel. Physica is out now at the brewery on draught and in cans, and look to local licensees to enjoy in your neighbourhood. A portion of the profits will be going to Women in Transition House in Fredericton and Cloverdale Centre for Women in Saint John. Donations are also being collected all month long for these organizations, at their Fredericton taproom, and the soon-to-open Union House Taproom in Saint John. Give early, and often!

Sydney’s Island Folk Cider House is also celebrating and supporting women with an IWD2023 release, Embrace Equity. This Honey & Lavender Cider is available at the taproom for samples, pints, and in bottles to take away. Part of the proceeds are being donated to Every Woman’s Centre, a non-profit promoting, developing and supporting the enhancement of women’s lives in Cape Breton Communities. Drop by Island Folk’s spot on Nepean Street to imbibe and support today!

On to the Hub of Nova Scotia, where Truro Brewing Company recently hosted Char of Hardisty Brewing for a brewday to celebrate Queer Women in the NS Brewing Industry. Taking inspiration from another popular fizzy drink, root beer, Char’s wife and business partner in Hardisty, Laura, put together an appropriate blend of spices and herbs to best recreate the in a beer. On the brewday, Jana of TBC hosted Char to make the final product a reality. The result is Wicked Roots, a 5.0% ABV Dark Ale. Heavily spiced both in, and after, the kettle, to bring out a vibrant root beer character. The beer is dropping early next week, it will be available on tap and in cans at Truro Brew Co, cans from Hardisty, and on tap at better establishments in the region, including Battery Park and Good Robot’s Robie Street taproom. [Ed note: we originally wrote that Laura was with Truro Brewing Company, and apologize for that mistake]

Switching to another charitable release, Big Axe Brewery has released Big Axe Bitter. Owner Peter Cole was prompted by drinks writer Craig Pinhey to brew the style, after the two had been speaking of their mutual loss of a parent to Alzheimer’s Disease. Pinhey spoke highly of the UK Bitter style, recalling the time he and his brothers took his father back to his hometown of Blackawton in England, and sharing pints in the many old pubs of the region, shortly before his father’s passing. Starting from a well-developed homebrew recipe provided by Pinhey, Cole made it BA’s own, but certainly kept the backbone of the original style, including some flaked maize and Maris Otter and Special B malts. A portion of the can sales will be going to Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick, and you can learn more from Cole himself in this video clip.

Heading up to Newfoundland, and Deer Lake in particular, we find that Rough Waters Brewing Company has a new beer on the go. Definitely not so seasonable with the weather in our region this weekend, but maybe a nice inspiration to think of warmer times ahead, Tangled is a lime gose that was brewed with both lime and sea salt, which should give you some margarita vibes even if laying on a beach chair right now is not an option. In keeping with Rough Waters’ overall environmental awareness it’s also a beer with a cause, with $1 from every can purchased going to the Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative and specifically their Zero-Plastic Waste Gros Morne program. Look for it at the brewery now, in Deer Lake at the Big Stop and Corner Brook at the NLC and it’ll be available on the East Coast in the coming weeks!

Fredericton’s Half Cut Brewing has a dark and roasty beer out this week, perfect as a morning pick-me-up or to finish off your day. Tire Fire is an Irish Dry Stout, and served on Nitro at the brewery, so you can enjoy the lovely cascading bubbles™ (probably) as the beer settles. Your patience will be rewarded with big roast and chocolate notes, along with a touch of earthiness from the hops. That nitro treatment means it is both creamy and dry at the same time, enticing you to take another sip (or pint).

Stop in at Moncton’s Tire Shack today, and you’ll see something distinctly aquamarine pouring from the taps. Channeling the blue waters of an island paradise where there isn’t 25 centimetres of snow on the ground, Brewers Henry and Murray cooked up a 5.0% Mango and Guava Sour, bursting with tropical stone fruit and citrus aromatics. But why the blue-green colour? Spirulina, a flavourless algae that is thought to be high in antioxidants, and even higher in happiness-inducing power. Grab Santorini on tap and in cans to go this weekend, before it sails away for good!

In Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley we’ve got a couple of new ciders to tell you about. Up first, in Kentville at Maritime Express, is the latest in their STORM series, this one inspired by Hurricane Fiona last fall, which had a devastating effect on the Valley’s apple crops, with 10-30% of apple crops lost to wind. Leveraging these storm-caused “drops” from local farmers has two impacts: it helps the farmers get some return on what would otherwise be lost crop, and it also has an impact on the cider itself, because early season fruit has less sugar and more tannins. Made from Honeycrisp and Gravenstein apples, this one is semi-dry and comes in at 5.8% ABV. It’s also got a charitable angle, with $0.50 of each 750ml bottle sold going towards The Portal Youth Outreach Association, “a safe space for youth to receive support and access programs.”

Meanwhile, in Annapolis Royal, East Coast Cider Co has a new cider of their own as well, a semi-sweet cider that wears its blueberry content proudly with its pale purple color. Featuring a subtle blueberry flavor and aroma, but maintaining a crisp finish, you’ll find this 6% ABV beauty, known simply as Blueberry Cider on tap and in cans at the brewery/cidery.

Antigonish’s Candid Brewing is trying to keep your identity (and dance moves) safe from the prying eyes at TikTok, by releasing Californication this week. Straight from Silicon Valley, this Pale Ale is solidly in the “West Coast” style, favouring hop bitterness and crispiness, over the haze and soft mouthfeel. At 5.4% ABV, it certainly punches above its weight. Grab it in cans, as well as on draught, at their taproom on College Street today.

The Year of North Brewing continues tomorrow, March 4, as the Cole Harbour brewery takes over the dozen taps at Barrington Street’s Bar Stillwell. From noon til sell-out, there will be a full complement and variety of styles on display, from their old-school Gus’ Blonde, Pip Pip Cheerio English Porter, Pear Core Values Cider, and a special release debuting tomorrow, Larger Than Larry. Keen-eyed Beer Detectives may be able to sort out what this beer is all about, taking inspiration from their Lawrencetown Session IPA, but increasing the alcohol and hops, to produce a 6.0% New England IPA. Look for this to be available on cask for enjoyment all day!

Great news for beer lovers in St. John’s, the Gahan Harbourview has now become fully operational, and is selling their own in-house brewed beer! Head Brewer Jordan is ready to show off what he’s been doing with a Behind the Brew event next Wednesday. Join Jordan in trying more than a half-dozen beers across the flavour spectrum, while pairing it with different food stations, including oysters, fish tacos, sliders, and more! This is a ticketed event, so grab yours today!

A couple more things before we dismiss you this week…

As they’ve done a couple of times previously, the homebrew-heads at BrewHQ in Burnside are selling some fresh, pre-made wort, for those of you looking to brew your own at home. As it is the season, and you could turn it around in a couple of weeks, they have cooked up an Irish Stout just in time for Saint Patrick’s Day. The specs are ~1.045 Starting Gravity, with an expected Final Gravity of 1.011 (YMMV, of course), for a 4.5% ABV Stout. Low bitterness, to about 30 IBU. Check their social media to be sure everything goes without a hitch this morning, then pop by to grab your aseptically-sealed bag o’ wort (bringing a milk crate or something similar will help with transportation).

Finishing up the week with some out-of-town brewery news, Bishop’s Cellar has brought in a fresh shipment of goodies from Fairweather Brewing of Hamilton, ON. Five beers are in the fridge as of today, including a Schwarzbier, Pale Ale, IPA, Fruited Sour, and a dessert Imperial Stout.
