Ol’ Biddy’s Brew House

All posts tagged Ol’ Biddy’s Brew House

While there are ghosts and goblins creeping around every corner, we promise no scares or frights in today’s post. We’ve got new brews and events across the region, so adjust your witch hat and Harry Potter glasses, and read on!

The Change is Brewing Collective recently got together with Music Nova Scotia and A. Keith’s Nova Scotia Brewery to celebrate the 25th anniversary of MusicNS and to give back to local communities. Dubbed Pier Beer and brewed on Mi’kma’ki, “It gives recognition to the melting pot of diversity & culture in Unimaki, Cape Breton.” A maple and spruce amber lager, it’s got very fall-friendly notes of maple, floral spruce, gingerbread, and cinnamon. So grab a sweater and head down to the Keith’s brewery on Lower Water Street to grab some.

Speaking of Fall collaborations, up on the Rock in Bay Roberts, NL, Baccalieu Trail Brewing has collaborated with Darkstar Coffee Roasters in nearby Carbonear to produce Have Your Cake & Eat It Too, a coffee cake-inspired brown ale. Brewed with demerara sugar and some sweeter malts for caramel and honey sweetness along with some burnt caramel character. Finished in the fermenter through conditioning on cinnamon bark and vanilla beans for a week, it’s got some distinct “dessert vibes” while still managing to weigh in at a fairly light 5.5% ABV. Sounds like a tasty Autumn tipple to us! Grab it on the Avalon Peninsula now, with distro reaching Central and Western Newfoundland in coming weeks.

Champions in terms of news volume today are the lovely folks at North Brewing, who have a new location and two returning beers for your pleasure this week. First up is the long anticipated full opening of their Timberlea taproom as of today. Although beer has been available at this location at retail for a year or so now, various delays (who ever heard of opening delays in the craft beer industry?!) have kept them to can and bottle sales until now. Featuring a 60-seat dining room to rival their spot in Cole Harbour and a very similar (possibly identical, to start) food menu, expect North’s usual fabulous “Cheers your neighbour” hospitality, just on the light side of Halifax Harbour. Open for full service food and beverage at 11:30am six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday, closing at 10pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and 11pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, they’ll also have the retail store open on Mondays from 12 – 8pm.

And if you’re wondering what to drink during your first visit to their new spot, they’ve got a couple of bangers back in circulation. First up, released just after we posted last week, is Cinnamon Bun imperial stout. A 9% ABV soft and sweet punch in the face, look for flavors of cinnamon with lots of body and sweetness. A once-a-year brew, grab it soon before it’s all gone. And just out today, timed perfectly for the opening of their TIMBERlea location, is the return of Timberbock, a 6.2% ABV amber lager, quite Märzen-lize, with plenty of body, but still a lovely crisp-like-the-fall-air finish. Grab one or both of these, along with your fave North core offerings, when you check out their new digs.

With the spooky weekend coming, we’ve got some Halloween themed beers and events going on this weekend. 2 Crows is going to have a special spooky version of Pollyanna (their flagship NEIPA) pouring from Friday to Sunday. Bloody Polly is the result of blending 20kg of blood orange into their current Pollyanna recipe, resulting in 150L available through the weekend. This turns the tropical vibes up in Pollyanna and adds even more juice. They’ve also got a movie screening on Halloween with free popcorn at 7 PM!

Staying in the theme of seasonal releases, Propeller is re-releasing Chocolate Orange Porter, a dark, big bodied porter, with flavours of roasted malts backing the tasty combination of chocolate and orange. At 5%, it’s a very approachable and tasty brew and it is available now in Propeller’s three locations, soon to be available in the Halifax private stores as well, and then at the NSLC as December approaches. Move over, Terry!

Trailway is back with this year’s version of Spooky! This is a “candy” sour that you may remember from last year that features blue raspberry flavours and leverages spirulina to give it a blue-green hue. This is available now from the brewery in 473ml cans and a limited number of kegs have been distributed around Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John as well.

Paradise’s Banished Brewing is back this week with two new releases. First up is a collaboration with St. John’s food truck Liqoursauce. This one is a 4.5% ABV mini-Dortmunder style lager. Cans are available now at the brewery and will be hitting Banished’s regular retail outlets next Thursday. Next up is Skelephone, a 6% IPA hopped with the Cryo-Pop blend from Yakima Chief. This one also saw an addition of blue spirulina algae to give the beer a halloween friendly blueish-green tinge. Rumour is the label also has some spooky vibes. Try cracking one in a dark room or in Paradise (by the dashboard lights, of course) to confirm.

Big Spruce is celebrating local legend Mattea Roach’s return to your screens during the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions with the release of Who is Mattea Roach? This 4% ABV session IPA saw a heavy Citra dry hop, leading to notes of tangerine and pink grapefruit. Cans are available now at the Sprucetique and through the online store. Mattea will be appearing in the Tournament of Champions on November 11, with a special warm up match airing on November 8.

Back in New Brunswick, Maybee Brewing Company has a new sour hitting the taps, with Give up the Gose. This darker take on the German Gose style incorporates the traditional coriander and sea salt additions, but also features chocolate wheat malt to give it a dark brown colour. Find it on tap at Maybee now.

Mount Pearl’s Landwash Brewery has a fun new four pack that riffs on its popular Brackish sour ale, featuring a favourite of the blog, sea salt from the Newfoundland Salt Company. Using the Citra-hopped base beer as a starting point, the first variation is Ruby Line, which incorporates additions of raspberry and lime. Next up is Pineapple Brackish, which swaps the Citra hops for southern hemisphere Wakatau, and sees an addition of pineapple during the conditioning stage. This one is also available in singles at the brewery. Rounding out the four-pack is Tangerine Brackish, which also sees an addition of Ekuanot hops. Grab it now at the brewery, with distribution across the Avalon next week and throughout the rest of Newfoundland later in November.

With all the various Fall-inspired beers around, it’s up to Annapolis Cider to balance things with a seasonal cider. Part of their Something Different series is Autumn Sweater, a 6.4% ABV cider with plenty of warmth for the incoming chill. Based on fresh pressed McIntosh apple juice, several hundred pounds of ripe peaches were added and co-fermented for 6 weeks. True Ceylon cinnamon bark and local pear juice bring complexity and additional warmth. Extra points if you get the musical reference, which you can hum as you sip. As with all Something Different ciders, this one sees $0.50 from the sale of each refillable bottle got to charity, in this case Hope Worldwide Canada (Halifax branch). Available only in Wolfville at the cidery.

Where to go and have a beer-y blast this weekend? Below is our Events section!

Three of everyone’s favourites are teaming up for a Sunday special! Taco Bellwoods is this Sunday, as the Stillwell Freehouse, is hosting Beverley’s Taco Service for food and Bellwoods Brewery for beer! The Bellwoods will be fresh kegs of some Bellwoods classics along with some fresh releases. Jutsu, Roman Candle, Jelly King, Cat Lady, Monogamy (Vista hops are showcased in this one), Goblin Sauce and Bellweiser are all expected to be on tap, but head down on Sunday if you can to check out all the goodies. Bring your family, friends, or go solo. Taco Bellwoods for all!

A few more quick hits before we dismiss you for the rest of the weekend …

Christmas creep is in full effect at Ol Biddy’s with the release of Naughty or Nice, their 7.6% AVB double chocolate stout. Keep on eye on the NSLC shelves for this one if you can’t make it to the brewery in Lower Sackville.

Apparently, chocolate stout is a thing, because Good Robot also has a new release out this week with their Chocolate Mint Nitro Stout. Look for notes of cocoa, mint and vanilla in this 5% cozy sipper.

Unfiltered continues their recent streak of Friday releases with the return of Here It Comes. Featuring hops from Quebec’s Duke25 Hops, this 7.5% DIPA features a big punch of citrus flavour and aroma. Cans are available now on North Street.

If you’re like us, you’re enjoying this lovely time of year while the temperatures are warm, but there is a nice crispness in the air. Did that sentence make you think of a Märzen? Oktoberfest? Fall beer gardens? Yes, please, to all of that. As usual, the beer news in the region keeps flowing and you can read all of the latest below.

From the valley of Nova Scotia, Delta Force Brewing is keeping their contributions to the Make Peace Not War beer project going, just as the war in Ukraine has been going on for over 6 months, there is always a chance to support relief efforts from afar. This sixth release of the project is a Brett Pale Ale. This one is 6% and available in 500ml bottles. As with all of these releases, Delta Force is donating 40% of sales to Red Cross Ukraine. Grab this from the Delta Force online shop today, for delivery in the HRM and Valley.

Nyanza’s Big Spruce Brewing teamed up with the force of nature that is Ren Navarro for a collaboration that reminds us that there is still much to be done to improve beer (and the world) for all. Don’t Make Me Tap The Sign is a 6.3% Hazy IPA, fermented with Voss Kveik yeast, and absolutely loaded with Mosaic and Sabro hops. Navarro is the mind behind Beer. Diversity., educating breweries and the drinking public on equitable and inclusive spaces and working to make beer more open to all. One of those ways to be inclusive is to spell it out specifically through breweries posting their values and code of conduct (for employees and visitors alike). And if there was a time that a patron is not respecting themselves or others…. Well…. Don’t Make Me Tap The Sign… Joining this new release is the return of a tasty little number, Lilliputian Nano IPA. Big hop character, thanks to Idaho Gem and Citra, this little cutie is just 3.5% ABV. Both will be in cans this weekend, stop by the brewery or online shop to ensure you get a chance to take some home for yourself!

Fredericton’s Trailway Brewing has a new beer on draught and in cans this week, in the SMaSH category. For those who may not know, a SMaSH beer is brewed using a Single Malt and a Single Hop, a great way for brewers and imbibers to explore what those ingredients bring to the table. For this expression, they went with Vienna Malt and Vic Secret hops. Think a touch of melanoidin apparent sweetness with plenty of lovely tropical notes, all in a 5.7% ABV package. Ready to enjoy or take away from the brewery now, it’s joined by the Aussie fave Dunder, their 4.8% Pale Ale packed with tropical fruit, pine, with a dank and herbal undertones thanks to the Down Under hops. Cans and pints aplenty on Main Street on Fredericton’s North Side.

Down on College Street in Antigonish, it’s only fitting that Candid Brewing has a new release with back to school and hanging on to some of that summer heat. Electro Lite is a light Mango Sour using real mango purée and a bit of sea salt. This is sour, juicy and very drinkable. It’s refreshing and at only 4%, you’ll want to go back for more thanks to its kick of flavour and approachability. This is available today on tap at the brewery and in cans to go.

Corner Brook’s Bootleg Brew Co has released a new beer in celebration of the upcoming CB Nuit Art After Dark Festival, happening next weekend, Sept 16-18. After Dark is a Dark Sour, with red currants, vanilla, and a touch of lactose to keep the mouthfeel smooth and silky. Big Cherry Cola vibes in this one, and it is available at the brewery, as well as the Humber Gardens NLC and West Street Ultramar.

And if you are looking for a part-time gig while attending college in town, Bootleg is looking for staff behind the bar. While experience is an asset, they’ll get you all trained up in the ways of the beer right quick! This is a part-time evening gig for someone looking to earn a few bucks while slinging beer. Fire them an email or drop by the brewery to learn more.

Barnone Brewery in Rose Valley, PEI, has released a new (chain) banger of a beer celebrating the Disc Golf Canadian Nationals, taking place at a few courses around the Island. Star Frame is a 5.0% ABV Festbier, and is an ode to the rare occurrence that all members of a playing group make a birdie (or better) on the same hole. We think there may be a few Star Frames this weekend, as the nation’s best are in the province to compete. Barnone has extended their hours to accommodate the visitors looking for it on draught or in cans (there’s a disc golf course in their backyard, btw), and those wanting to have a pint elsewhere, check out Charlottetown’s Hopyard, John Brown’s, and The Beer Garden, or 511 West in Summerside.

Getting to the dark stuff, Propeller has a returning beer that’s back now as a seasonal keg for now and hopefully in cans in the coming weeks. Porter  – London Style is a dark and full-flavoured release that is easy drinking with a smooth mouthfeel. This has rich flavours of chocolate and coffee, with lovely aroma and flavour from the roasted malts. This is 5% and 39 IBU and look for this around Halifax for the fall and winter seasons.

Out in the bustling metropolis of Lower Sackville, NS, Ol’ Biddy’s Brewhouse has a couple of new beers to talk about, both in celebration. First up, local band and friends of the brewery, Callehan are playing a show at Biddy’s for the release of their new single “Canada’s Pirate Queen” and they came down to the brewery and put together a small batch to ultra-personalize their release party. An English-inspired ale with a base of Maris Otter, the grist also included Crystal 75 for some toffee and deep sweetness and chocolate malt for color and a bit of balancing roastiness. The hop side sees American Willamette meeting UK East Kent Goldings for primarily spicy and herbal notes with maybe a hint of citrus and floral overtones. At 5.1% and 23 IBU expect it to be easy drinking for a night of listening to folky Americana, which is what Callehan will be bringing tomorrow night at the brewery. Don’t expect to see too much of it left on Sunday, though.

Next up is a beer celebrating a person, Biddy’s Brewer Keith Forbes’ Grandfather, known as “Pops,” a kind-hearted gent to whom Keith decided to pay tribute with a beer, and the brewery’s first production lager at that. Just in time for Oktoberfest, Pop’s Pilsner, a 4.7% ABV golden straw-colored lager, slightly sweet and bready, and a light floral hop character. Not too bitter at 29 IBU, a crisp finish should invite another sip. This one won’t be released for general consumption until September 16th, when you’ll find it pouring at the taproom and canned to go, but if you’re a newsletter subscriber you know how you can try it a little early (and if you’re not a newsletter subscriber yet, it’s pretty easy to become on if you just pop on over to their site). Regardless of whether you’re early or right on time to try this one, you should find an easy drinking beer, perfect for sharing with good times with family and friends.

Staying in HRM, Serpent Brewing has two new releases out this weekend. Up first is Townie Overpass Syndrome, a 6.3% ABV NEIPA. Originally brewed for a tap takeover in St. John’s that was unfortunately cancelled, expect a hazy and juicy take on the style, helped out by the London Fog Yeast strain. The hops include Simcoe and Zeus in the boil to the tune of 30 IBUs and a Simcoe and Sabro dry hop. Expect lots of coconut notes from the Sabro but also a touch of pine and other tropical fruit. Next up is Open Road, a 5% ABV lagered ale. Brewed as part of the annual Open Road fundraiser for the BLT multi-purpose trail, this one uses Perle hops and features some fruity esters from the fermentation. Check out the taproom in Spryfield for both beers this weekend.

Chef Stephen Barrett had a busy spring and summer… he visited 30 Nova Scotia breweries, chatting with the brewers and owners about their journey into beer, and is publishing recipes to pair with the breweries offerings. Folks are encouraged to check out his Pints & Plates series on the Seasoned Plate website, where two new destinations are released every week (the latest with Hill Top Hops and Meander River are particularly spicy!). You can get a small glimpse into Chef Barrett’s process, as a mini-doc highlighting a few stops in the Valley and a day in the kitchen afterwards has been released this week. Keep your eyes peeled on the SP social media for plenty more beery content!

Rolling over to Halifax, we turn to a symbol of constantly delicious, dependably juicy and always a pleasure. Unfiltered Brewing has DOA coming back out tomorrow in cans. This Double Orange Ale, as always, is a single hop Double IPA featuring Citra. This is available Friday September 9th at Noon from the brewery and on-tap next door at Charm School.

Port Rexton Brewing has a fresh new release celebrating this weekend’s BonRexton Granfondo. Headwind is a 4.8% Pale Ale, easy drinking (a must after a long ride around the Bonavista Peninsula) blast of dank, tropical, and citrus notes on the nose and palate, thanks to plenty of Galaxy, Mosaic, and Columbus hops. Available on tap for pints and growler fills and cans at the brewery, with cans hitting the St. John’s Retail Shop and other retailers next week.

On PEI (or willing to relocate) and interested in working in craft beer? Upstreet is looking for folks:

Charlottetown’s Upstreet Brewing has had a busy summer, and is looking to welcome a couple of people into the brewhouse to keep ahead of the fall and winter… For those already brewing elsewhere, or having graduated from Brewing School, you can hop right into the Brewer position. And for those looking to enter the career, and are willing to learn the ways of the beer jedi, they are also hiring a Brewery Assistant. Check those links and reach out to Hogie & Co today!

Hello thirsty readers and happy Friday! After a big May 2-4 weekend of releases and events, the breweries and cideries of Atlantic Canada seem to be resting up in anticipation of the coming summer wave, which means a quieter week in beer news. Fear not though, we still have a handful of new releases and a great event to keep you posted about as you roll into the weekend.

Out in Lower Sackville, Ol’ Biddy’s Brewhouse is planning a big party to celebrate the nice weather and support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, and how better to do that than with a big party with live music and beer? Tomorrow, that’s Saturday, May 28th, if you head down you’ll find a lineup of 7 musical acts on the patio, each playing an hour-long set starting at 1PM and finishing at 9PM. Meanwhile, you’ll be able to sit and enjoy the tunes while you sip the brewery’s finest, including a new release specifically for the event: Frau Ribbentrop. Part of the #BrewForUkraine campaign, it’s one of the recipes published by Pravda Brewery. A Belgian-style Witbier, with orange peel and coriander, it’s a 4.5% ABV beer with a lovely citrus aroma and subtle bitterness; perfect for sipping in the sun. A portion of sales of this beer from the taps as well as sales from the 2,800 bottles that were packaged will be donated to humanitarian organisations through #BrewForUkraine. So come on down and have a pint and enjoy some tunes; based on a quick peek at the forecast, though, we recommend checking OB socials (Fb, Ig, Tw) for any news of rain plans!!

Chester’s Tanner & Co Brewing released a new Czech-inspired Pilsner last week, and it is available now on tap and in cans. Most is named after the newly-released Czech hop variety of the same name, which is Czech for “bridge”, it is seen as a bridge between the UK and European Union, given the UK’s recent departure from that organization. Developed in the UK but grown in the Czech Republic, it features a rather potent aroma of strawberry and bubblegum, with tropical and citrus undertones, and given its higher acid content, it can be used for both bittering or later in the process, which Tanner took to heart by using it throughout the brewing and conditioning of the beer. The end result is a 5.7% ABV beer, with a healthy 40 IBU of bitterness. Pop down to their brewery or taproom in the Chester area to grab a pint or fill, or you can order cans for delivery anywhere between Bridgewater and Halifax too!

Looking to continue your brewing career and/or looking for an excuse to join the thousands of Canadians who have recently moved to Moncton? Now’s your chance! Tide & Boar Brewing, the hugely popular accompaniment to the Tide & Boar Gastropub in the heart of downtown, is hiring! They are looking for an experienced person to jump right in as Head Brewer, so experience is necessary. You’ll be supporting the local thirst for their year-round faves like Robot Food IPA and Millions of Peaches, and have the chance to develop your own recipes too! Fire an email over to Chad at admin@tideandboar.com with your resume to learn more! If there’s a staff discount on pizza, we may have to apply ourselves!

This spring has seen the return of many beer related events that went on a temporary hiatus due to the pandemic. We are thrilled to see more opportunities popping up for people to get together and safely enjoy some fermented beverages, while supporting our great local producers. If you’re near Western Cape Breton on June 4th, you’ll have such an opportunity with the Brook Village Beerfest and Square Dance. Square dances at the Brook Village hall are a legendary pilgrimage unto themselves, and this event will see the addition of beer, cider and food to sweeten the deal. A ticket gives you access to samples from Boxing Rock, Breton Brewing, Bulwark Cider, Candid Brewing, Half Cocked, Island Folk Cider, Route 19, Tatamagouche, along with the chance to dance some sets to performers Kenneth MacKenzie, Mac Morin, and Pat Gillis. The Stand and Stuff Your Face food truck will also be onsite to make sure you have a sufficient base for all of that beer and dancing. Tickets are available online now or across the road at the Brook Village Grocery, with a portion of the proceeds supporting Atlantic Coastal Action Program of Cape Breton, a non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems on the island.
