Prost! With the weather turning a bit chillier this week, and the unfortunate massive rainfall felt in a few places around the region, we’re hit with the reminder that it can’t be summer forever! Thankfully there are plenty of new and returning beers and events on the go now that will help distract us from the inevitable. Read on to learn more!

Good news to those of us thirsting for more pale ales and lagers, Stillwell Brewing has opened their retail location at 3670 Kempt Road this week! Current hours are 10 AM – 5 PM, Monday to Friday, and may adjust slightly going forward with demand. Right now they have fresh cans of Stilly Pils German Lager and Best Bitter English Pale Ale, with their Kompakt Kolsch coming before the end of the month. Their website has been updated with latest offerings and delivery is an option for those unable to get down to their new spot. Congratulations to the StillyBrew team!

Shelburne’s finest has a new release available now. Fusion is a Cold IPA and is the first of the style for Boxing Rock. The beer is crisp, clean and uses new world hops to bring big tropical and stone fruit flavours and aroma. The finish is very clean and dry and is very crushable for a 6.5% IPA. This beer is available in cans now at Shelburne and their new Halifax (corner of Almon & Windsor) locations, and will be hitting the Halifax private stores in the coming weeks.

Just in time for the turn of the weather, 2 Crows Brewing is back with a change to Classic, their dry stout. The new recipe now joins AC Lager and Terra, as now using 100% Atlantic Canadian grown ingredients. The hops are Golding variety from New Brunswick, malt sourced from PEI (with some extra roasting of the malts in-house to achieve the right level!). This is still a 4.1% easy drinking, classic dry stout with a dark, roasty character. There is a new label design as well, but still look for that tall, dark, and handsome can. This will be more widely available than its previous release; now available from the brewery, but it will be in the NSLC starting in early October, along with the private stores in HRM.

More from 2 Crows (never ones to skimp on news and details!) this week, as they’ve got an event today (September 16th) starting at 7 PM as they host a 2nd annual fundraiser for Team Daigle. Tickets for the event (2 Crows and 4 Curlers) are $25 at the door and include your first pint and an entry to win some prizes. The event also has a special small-batch release for the fundraiser. Hammer Time Lager is a 4% lager that should taste a bit familiar, like AC Light Lager, but this has been dry hopped with Azacca and Galaxy. Sign us up for that delicious beer and support your local curlers before they hammer down on the curling season kicking off next week!

Montague’s Copper Bottom Brewing is celebrating the return of the 70 Mile Yard Sale this weekend with their 70 Mile Yard Ale! An American-style Wheat Ale, it is fresh and light, with orange peel added to enhance the citrus character even more. Available on tap and in cans, at 5.0% and just 15 IBU, this one will be perfect for taking a break between stops to check out the offerings at the more than 120 vendors from Point Prim to Strathcona!

This weekend is absolutely chock full of even more events in our region, check them out below. And as always, if we’re missing a new release, event, or something else you think our readers would like to know, reach out via social media or email!

This weekend, Halifax is even more beer-ful than usual, as the re-imagined Nova Scotia Craft Beer Festival is back! Taking place outside this evening, and tomorrow afternoon and evening, they are taking over the Salter Block at 1521 Lower Water Street, the lot across the street from the Brewery Market. Presented by the Craft Brewers Association of Nova Scotia, which represents breweries from all across the province, 40 breweries will be pouring their latest and greatest creations, while live music or DJs keep your toes tapping. Your ticket allows access to the Salt Yard vendors next door. In case you didn’t win in our giveaway last weekend, and haven’t yet grabbed your ticket, fear not, there are still a few available online! And, in a first for the Fest, attending breweries were given the option to sell beer to go! Nice to see that beer is now given the same consideration as the wine and whiskey shows. 🙂

Moncton’s Tire Shack is getting into the Oktoberfest celebrations for the next three weekends, as they host their own ode to that biggest of ‘Fests. First up is the return of Helles Yeah!, their Helles Lager, fresh off a win at the 2022 Canadian Brewing Awards. You can get in the spirit of grabbing one of their limited edition 1 litre Oktoberfest Mass, just $20 including your first pour of HY!. And pals from Euston Park Social will be in the tap room with their fresh and fun food offerings, each Friday from 4 PM, and Saturday from 1 PM, until Oktober 1st.

This is shaping up to be a busy weekend, as Lr Sackville’s TAPestry Beer Bar is kicking off their Oktoberfest, which is running a full 2 weeks to coincide with Wiesn, aka Munich’s celebrations, . They’re tapping a dozen small batch German beers from across Nova Scotia tomorrow, with a noon start for their Beer Club Members, 2 PM for the general public. Complete with warm bretzels on Saturday, and live music from 6 – 10 PM, there will be plenty of good fun and cheer to complement the bier pouring freely from the taps. Tune into their Social Media for the taplist and updates on the goings ons for the event on until Oct 2, including a way to try the beers today, a day early!

Over on Barrington Street, Stillwell Beer Bar is hosting Matron Fine Beer for a takeover tomorrow, September 17th. From noon til late, they’ll have 9 different offerings on tap, from their Bobo farmhouse Wheat, Muff Darkbier, to a few IPAs including the Vanguard collaboration with Bellwoods. For those who may not make it down for the big day, there are cans of a few of the offerings (Janky IPA, Leisure Landbier, Vanguard IPA, and Deece IPA) that will be available beyond the weekend (if you’re lucky!).

A few more things before we sign off this week…

Could you read about Oktoberfest beers all day? That doesn’t sound so bad, especially if you can get out and about to drink some, too! Grimross has Märzen-bier available today. A malt-forward, classic, crisp German lager, this is an annual release from the brewery at 5.6% with a lovely Bavarian-inspired label. This is available in cans and on tap at the brewery, but will also be available at restaurants and ANBL locations around New Brunswick.

Sticking with the Oktoberfest theme, Trailway has Festbier re-releasing this week. Like a lighter version of a Märzen, this is an Oktoberfest Lager made with a full German malt bill and German yeast. Cans are available now at the brewery and also on their Lukr side-pull tap for pints. The beer is 6%, deep gold in colour with a malty richness, this beer is perfect for the cooler fall weather and still easy drinking.

The crew out of Greenwich keeps staying in the weekly blog (that’s good!) and this week they’re back with a re-release, as Delta Force Brewing brings us Operation Jug!. This is a classic farmshed Saison and the beer was open fermented in a former milk jug. The result is a 5.2% floral, spicy and crisp ale, keeping in the Saison tradition of easy drinking for the post-work refreshment. This is available now in 500ml bottles from their online shop

A very small bit of news for you prompt Friday afternoon readers, Unfiltered Brewing currently isn’t doing growler fills for a few days due to some technical issues. They’ll let the people know when they’re back up and running. Doesn’t affect cans or enjoying pints at Charm School next door, however!

We’re firmly into the throes of Summer here in the Atlantic Provinces, and with some lovely sunny weather and dryer air on the way, you’d be remiss if you didn’t get some beers together to enjoy outdoors (y’know, if you’re into that kind of thing). Luckily, our region’s breweries are also fully into the swing of summer, with new and returning favourites hitting the shelves and the taps this week across the region. So read on and see what new treats might be available at your locals in addition to your usual faves.

Let’s start things off in Northeastern Nova Scotia, where Big Spruce and Candid are releasing a new collab called Talus. This 7.4% hazy double IPA showcases the Talus hop, along with some complementary additions of Sabro and Mosaic hops, leading to prominent citrus notes, including grapefruit. Check out the label art for a fun play on the ever popular Wordle, where the breweries add a few more descriptors of the beer. Cans are available now at the Sprucetique and for delivery via Big Spruce’s online store. In more Spruce news, keep your eyes peeled for a new can design for their Tag! You’re It! IPA, which to date has raised more than $110,000 for the Ocean Tracking Network.

We’ve got a special release out of Montague, PE, this week, as Copper Bottom Brewing releases Betty’s Ale, a Golden Ale that has a lot of heart behind it. From the brewery: “Betty, who was affectionately known as ‘Captain Izzy,’ was one of the first women in Eastern PEI to captain her own fishing boat, had a heart the size of PEI, and was the best doggone biscuit maker this side of Kings County.” This golden ale is 5% ABV, very drinkable and approachable (like Betty!) with flaked rice additions to the malt bill,  this adds to a crispier mouthfeel and dry finish, pairing with balancing Columbus hops at 20 IBU. This beer is also being released to help support emerging female entrepreneurs in PEI, with $1 from every can and pint going towards the PEI Business Women’s Association. This is available now in cans and on tap from the brewery.

A re-release from Halifax’s Propeller Brewing this week, just after Canada Day, but featuring New Zealand hops. NZ Pils (not to be confused with NA Lager), is a New Zealand Pilsner featuring the pairing of hops, Nelson Sauvin and Motueka, native to NZ.  With a nice malt backbone and citrus and white wine aromas, this is 40 IBU and 5.2% and very nice and crispy. Watch for this in cans and on draught at the Prop Shops, and at licensees around HRM.

And as they continue to celebrate their 25th Anniversary in 2022, July is the time for events to really ramp up, with 90s Karaoke Night at their Quinpool Tap Room on July 16, Propeller Arcade holding a block party screening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the parking lot of their Gottingen location (previously Wormwoods Cinema) July 24, and on July 29, you can get the VIP treatment as you tour their Dartmouth brewing facilities to learn about all facets of the design and making of the beer and how it makes it into fridge and/or your glass! Click here to learn more and grab tickets! And hey, if you want to learn about the events, upcoming special release beers, and more, be sure to subscribe to the 902 BrewCast now, so you’ll get the episode with Cam and Pat of Propeller when it drops on #902sday!

In the category of returning beer with a new recipe (new hops, who dis?) we turn to Fredericton’s Trailway, as Shades is an IPA back for another year with a new batch of hops. This year, it’s made with a blend of 100% Aussie hops, using Eclipse, Vic Secret and Topaz which are sure to bring big flavours and aromas of orange, pineapple, pine, with some floral notes as well, in this 6.6% IPA. We can’t wait to stick our noses (with open mouths) in this one. Other people say that, right? Grab this one in cans and on tap at the brewery.

You may spot this one in the wild this week from Tatamagouche Brewing, Waterlily Belgian Witbier is their take on a traditional Belgian wheat. It’s 4.9% and uses raw wheat, with additions of curaçao orange peel, freshly cracked coriander, and elderflower. Bringing iconic flavours and aromas of citrus and spice, you’ll be able to find this one around the province in kegs and we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any canning and retail releases.

And while we’re talking Tata, a heads up that their collaboration with Dartmouth’s North Brewing, Cool Melon Kolsch, which sees kilos and kilos of fresh watermelon added to the tanks, is set to release at North July 14. To celebrate, North is holding a Tata Tap Takeover at their spot at 899 Portland Street all weekend (while kegs last), with 4 options from the visitors, in addition to the collab beer, and slushies! Stop by to take part in the fun!

It’s Annapolis Royal Pride Day tomorrow, and to celebrate, Annapolis Brewing Company and Lunn’s Mill teamed up to bring us Saisons of Love. A 5.0% Saison with hibiscus, this beer starts in the classic Franco-Belgian style, and then is enhanced with the addition of hibiscus, for floral and fruity notes on the nose (enhanced by the dry-hopping with Mandarina Bavaria), and a lightly tart kick on the palate, finishing dry. Refreshing and fun, the beer is available on tap and in cans today at both establishments.

Let’s head to Nova Scotia’s South Shore, to Lunenburg’s Shipwright Brewing. They have released a cool hybrid of a beer on the weekend, Full Sail Smoked Pale Ale. Drawing on the best of both worlds, Full Sail features Smoked malt in the grist for just a touch of smoke on the palate, while remaining bright and fresh, and at 5.5%, perfect for patio sippin’. Grab it at their spot on Montague Street for pints and cans this weekend!

If you had to pick which brewery has the mostly new releases every week, who would it be? Village Green always seems to be in our weekly posts and this week they’ve got not one, but three! They decided to up the ante on their popular (and tasty!) Modern Bitter, to brew a straight up Extra Special Bitter. ESB is a classic recipe using Maris Otter as the main star of the grain bill, along with crystal and chocolate malts. Balanced with East Kent Goldings and Bramling Cross hops in the boil and then again for some dry-hopping action, this English wonder is 5.3% and available in cans and on tap from the brewery in Cornwall. Joining it is a brand new IPA named Oceanside, weighing at 7.0% and full of classic Cascade, Simcoe, and Amarillo throughout. And for good measure, they’ll be releasing a 5.2% Simcoe Pale Ale this weekend, so be sure to pop by (open 12 – 10 PM today and Saturday, 1 – 6 PM Sunday).

And finally this week, if you recently said to yourself (or your beer buddies) “I need some more short cans for beach/camping/summer/grillin’,” then 2 Crows was listening. Their flagship IPA, Pollyanna is available now in 6-packs in that lovely 355ml format. This beer has evolved over the years, but if you want a 7.3% NEIPA at 64 IBU with mega-juice, haze, and citrus, this one is for you. This 6x355ml format is only available at the taproom on Brunswick Street in Halifax

Happy Summer, folks! It’s the last Friday of June, which means many kids are counting down the last days of school for another year. And for those who celebrate, joyeux journée Saint-Jean-Baptiste aujourd’hui! We’ve got plenty of new brews, as well as Anniversary and Re-Opening celebrations for you to attend this weekend. With next week’s Canada Day falling on a Friday, we’ll be sending out the news to you a day early (brewery pals please take note).

The region’s newest brewery, Paradise’s Banished Brewing, has rounded out their offerings with 3 more beers since we shared the news at the beginning of the month. Let’s get you up to speed on what to drink, and where to drink them!

Paradise Town is their 5.5% Fruited Sour, featuring Pink Guava puree added for a tropical kick. Look for more iterations of this beer as they play with the fruit additions throughout the year.

An Elaborate Series of Mirrors is a 5.0% American Lager, crushable, quaffable, however you want to put it, this beer is made for easy enjoyment.

Tall Trees, with a label reminiscent of the Redwoods in the Pacific Northwest, is a 7.0% West Coast IPA. Piney and citrusy, there is a serious bitterness in here to match the aromatics.

All three have been canned, and join Out The Gate Trappist-inspired Single, Space Puffin NEIPA, and NO NO NO YES NO EI Pale Ale at Avalon-area Marie’s, NLCs, and on tap at better bars in town, including Bar Brewdock.

Half Cocked Brewing in North Grant, just outside of Antigonish, is celebrating their Grand Re-Opening this weekend. After undergoing major renovations over the past two years, which saw more than a 20-fold increase in their production capacity, as well as opening a welcoming taproom and patio capable of accommodating more than 100 people, they are ready to toast how far they’ve come! They have released two new beers to toast with, including Almost Friggin’ Famous, a 8.0% Double Friggin’ IPA. The alcohol is tempered by a solid bitterness from the Simcoe and Centennial hops used throughout, which also lend big pine character to the flavour and aroma. Brewed in collaboration with Good Friggin’ Company, an apparel company based in Lower South River. Even friggin’ better is that $0.25 from each can goes to their Small Town, Big Stages bursary, an award given to High School graduates going into a Music program, with 3 awards of $1000 to be distributed this year.

Also new on tap and in cans at Half Cocked this weekend is Something Sour, a 5.0% dry-hopped Sour, featuring the lovely Idaho 7 hop. Refreshing and tart, the hops and Lacto work together for a citrus bomb of grapefruit and tangerine on the nose and palate.

The brewery is celebrating tomorrow from noon ‘til late with The Crafty Cooks food truck running a BBQ all day, and live music starting at 3 PM. The Ceilidhmen are taking the stage 3 – 5 PM, with Jason Spracklin playing 6 – 8 PM, with Mitch (of Good Friggin’ Company) & the Good Company band starting their set at 9 PM (the final set will have a $10 cover, half of which goes to the bursary). As it will be outside, bringing a lawn chair or blanket is a good idea, if you need a break from the dancing. Congratulations to Greg, Nick, and the entire Half Cocked Crew!

Another brewery celebrating this weekend is Charlottetown’s (and Burnside’s) Upstreet Brewing. Hard to believe that it’s been 7 years since they opened their doors on Allen Street, but here we are! As is tradition, they are also taking the opportunity to release their annual De Novo, taking the opportunity to begin anew. De Novo VII is a Mango Apricot Saison, taking up the mantle from last year’s introduction of fruit (absent from the 5 previous releases), and doubling the fruiting rate again. The spicy pepper character from the yeast plays well with the mango character, with the apricot offering a subtle tartness. Neither fruit takes over the beer, and is not at all sweet, as the Saison yeast dried it out nicely. Dry-hopped with German Callista for a bit more stone fruit on the nose. The 6.26% (also their birthdate!) Saison is canned again this year, for sale at all of their locations, and may even be on tap at a favourite Halifax-based bar in the next while.

Joining that is Fireworks 2022, Upstreet’s annual collaboration with The Inn at Bay Fortune, and their Fireworks kitchen. Sourcing Pilsner, Wheat, and Rye malts from Island Malt House, with lime basil and a variety of mints varietals hand picked and dried by Farmer Kevin at the The Inn’s farm. Just a little bit of estate-grown Comet hops were added in the whirlpool. The mints come through on the nose, with the basil complementing the herbal and hay notes of the saison yeast. Packaged in a 500 ml bottle, this 6.0% Saison is available now at the brewery’s spots, with some limited draught as well, and in bottle at The Inn at Bay Fortune, where Chef Michael Smith might even sabre a bottle for you!

What’s the plan for the celebratory weekend, you ask? Well, tonight, Craft Beer Corner is transforming into a late night dance party, which kicks off at 11 PM. Ramzoid and guest will be spinning tunes under the party lights until late. (The CBC will be closed 9 – 10 PM to prepare, with a $10 cover when they reopen).

Tomorrow, the taproom and parking lot on Allen Street will be alive with the sound of music, as acts from across the province will be playing all afternoon and evening, from 3 until 8:30 PM (no charge). Brackley Bay Oyster Co will be shucking all afternoon as well!

Sunday, DJ Nimo is capping the weekend with a set beginning at 9 PM at Craft Beer Corner, so get your groove on to celebrate! No cover charge for this evening’s fun.

Congratulations to Hogie, Mitch, and everyone at Upstreet on the continued success!

Big Spruce’s new releases continue to feature interesting styles, with this week’s release of Altruist showing off their take on the Altbier style. Originating in the German city of Düsseldorf, Altbier is a malt-forward but highly quaffable ale that features sufficient bitterness to keep flavours well balanced, and generally is great with food. Altruist comes in at a sessionable 5% and is available now on-tap in Nyanza. Keep an eye on their online store for a potential release in cans.

In Wolfville, Annapolis Cider is releasing the latest in its Something Different series. This one is a 6.5% wine/cider blend that they’re calling Strawberry Sangria. The cider starts with pressed apple juice and adds fresh-pressed local strawberries and cranberries, along with a dose of orange juice, a traditional sangria ingredient. It is then blended with Riesling from Sainte Famille Wines in Falmouth. The resulting drink pours with a pink salmon hue, and features a pleasing acidity and lots of berry notes. As an added bonus, $0.50 from each bottle sold will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities Atlantic, a great organization that provides accommodations to families with sick children while they access medical care. Bottles of Strawberry Sangria are available now.

Long Bay Brewery in Rothesay NB has a pair of new beers this week that we’re excited to tell you about. First up is Wasted Day, a hazy and flavourful New England IPA, that is the pinnacle of years of experimental brews, with recipe and technical changes made along the way. Loading up the mash with grain and hops that are full of thiol precursors, that the yeast can then liberate into strong tropical aromatics and flavour. When a dry-hop addition comes in during fermentation, this restarts the process, with the more permanent haze being produced. During a final conditioning phase, a big addition of Eclipse to complement with notes of pine and mandarin orange. All in a tidy 6.0% package, Wasted Day is on sale in cans and draught at the brewery now.

Joining it is The Big Brew, a 5.0% Golden Ale brewed in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John. Brewed using Bairds 2.0 Malt, a Kolsch-style yeast, and hopped with Mandarina Bavaria, this crisp and clean golden ale is available on tap and in cans at the brewery and select retail and tap accounts. Half of all profits of the brew go towards the organization, helping to connect kids with mentors in the community.

Let’s continue the news with another of Serpent Brewing’s Beer Creation Series releases, Inherited Taste. Chris Carrigan signed up to be part of the supporting community of Spryfield’s brewery, and chose a fruited kettle sour for his beer. The peach kettle sour is actually the brewery’s first foray into that style, and they took hold with both hands. Crisp, refreshing, and tart, with a nice level of the eponymous stone fruit on the palate. Carrigan’s daughter designed the label which adorns the 345 ml bottles, which are available now at the brewery.

Montague’s Copper Bottom is releasing a new beer that they’ve been patiently sitting on for over a year. Tandem is a flanders style brown ale, also known as an oud bruin, with a grain bill featuring 2-row, wheat, chocolate malt, light munich, carafe. This one saw a light hop addition of Centennial and Warrior hops before spending over 12 months in a chardonnay barrel, continuing to ferment with the bugs from the wood, adding a distinct tartness. You can also expect a vinous and oak quality from the barrel, along with rich malt flavours of plum, fig and raisin. Bottles of the 5.1% ABV Tandem will be available soon in Montague or for delivery through Copper Bottom’s online store.

Annapolis Brewing Company has a new beer pouring, and in cans, at their Annapolis Royal location. Summer Session Pale Ale is a light 3.0%, perfect for imbibing in volume during the warmest season. Barley and Wheat malts make up the grist, with Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon hops after fermentation, leading to spicy and floral aromatics, along with melon, stone fruit, and citrus in the glass. Pop by their taproom and retail shop this weekend to grab a few!

Lots of Anniversary celebrations happening in our region this weekend, so get your drinking pants on, and tag in your Designated Driver!

Head up to Sydney tomorrow to help the crew at Breton Brewing to celebrate their 7th Anniversary, complete with special guests, discounts, and music all day! Open from 12 – 10 PM, there will be giveaways happening throughout the day, with limited edition glassware on sale. Little Rolling Bistro will be set up from 2 – 8 PM with a full menu, and there will be live music from Duane Nardocchio (2 – 5 PM) and Curt Dillon & Calum MacPhee (5 – 8 PM). Be sure to pop by, grab some grub, have a pint, then buy some beer to go. One of those to-go beer could be their newly released Bottle-Conditioned Stirling Hefeweizen. The German Wheat beer was one of their earliest releases back in 2015, and they’ve gone traditional with the extra level of natural re-fermentation and carbonation right in the bottle.

A few more parting words today, and sorry for the late release!

As part of their 25th Anniversary celebrations, Propeller put out the call to their fans on what beers they would like to see return. While we were holding out for Sharp Angus, the public has spoken, and Stone Fruit has taken the prize. A can-only re-release, this 5.0% refreshing beer is bursting with notes of peach, apricot, and mango, and probably is the better choice for enjoying on a picnic or at the beach, rather than a Hemp Ale… You win!

Now fully back in the groove of things, the 902 BrewCast have delved into the world of mead for their latest release, sitting down with Eric and Ronnie of the newly-opened Eventide Mead, located in Burnside. They talk all about the sourcing of the honey from a local producer, dip their toes into the different styles of mead (and hybrids), and where they think this naturally gluten-free beverage can go in the province. Listen in for free wherever you grab podcasts (or right here). And since recording, the Eventide crew has expanded their retail store hours to Thursdays and Fridays 11 AM – 6 PM, at their 196 Joseph Zatzman Drive location.

Speaking of 902BC, their faithful sponsors Bishop’s Cellar have a bunch of tasty beers on the shelves today, including some beauties from Brasserie de Blaugies, de Ranke (yes, XX Bitter is on the list), and Drie Fonteinen. Local breweries are getting some love too, as Big Spruce’s Saison Opener Grisette, Propeller’s White Belgian Witbier, the aforementioned Bottle-Conditioned Hefeweizen from Breton, and Tatamagouche’s Cellar Slammer, now in 355 ml cans, ideal for … well… slamming.

One last thing before you go. Miramichi’s Timber Ship Brewing has been in business for 4 years, operated by two dedicated couples, pouring their heart and soul into the operation. Through community and local business support, they have managed to survive during the extremely difficult last couple of years. Given recent changes to their career and family commitments, they have had to evaluate Timber Ship, and are looking to close one chapter, and begin another with respect to the brewery. They are looking for someone to continue the Timber Ship story, whether that means on the same level, or to expand its reach even further. If you are interested, or know of a potential buyer, please check out their post and get in touch!
