How do you like this heat and humidity folks?! Are you sticky and icky and sweaty gross? You’ll forgive us for being predictable if we suggest that the best treatment (‘cause there’s no antidote) for weather like this is beer and cider. Luckily there are plenty of new releases and re-releases on the go at our region’s breweries to keep your tastebuds interested and your weather-induced discomfort minimized. We encourage you to check out your favourite brewery’s facilities this weekend, whether that be in air-conditioned comfort, enjoying sunshine on a patio (your results may vary depending on your location), or commiserating regarding the lack thereof. Hey, at least you’ll have beer!

Starting with the week off, we start with some cultural news out of Halifax as the 40th Africville reunion kicks off on Friday July 21st and lasts for a week. While you can check out all the events here (it’s for everyone!), North Brewing and the Change is Brewing Collective is re-releasing Deep Rooted, a brown ale in celebration of Africville. The ale itself is inspired by the molasses and brown sugar used by black elders in the brewing process back in the day. This one is 5.7% and will be available at the reunion tonight, and at North Brewing now. Every can sold will contribute to the Africville Museum and Change is Brewing. Stay tuned for more CiBC news, as they are going to be busy in August, too!

As part of the Come Home to Wabush celebrations this weekend, Iron Rock Brewing has released a special beer to commemorate the town’s history and future. 1967 Inc Blackberry and Blueberry Sour marks the year the Town of Wabush was incorporated, and features the abundant local fruit growing around town. At 4.5% ABV, it’s light and refreshing and a beautiful shade of pink, and shares the story of the town to all who will see it. Come Home has a special place for Brian and Dave Hurley of Iron Rock, commemorated on the can, “In loving memory of our Aunt Roma Hawco and each dedicated resident who built our community. – Come Home to Wabush 2023. From the earth, we prosper.” Grab it at the brewery on tap and in cans, as well as at many of the events happening during the week’s festivities.

There is no question one of the very interesting recent style trends in North American Craft Beer is the Light Lager. Whether you think they’re a sad acknowledgement that craft beer has to compete on macro beer’s terms, whether you cite them as a craft victory for showing that “light lager” doesn’t have to mean ‘insipid’, or whether you just know that a light lager is the perfect, “Can we just drink some fuckin’ beer,” beer, Big Spruce is the latest brewery to have you covered. Camp Spruce will happily accompany you from your après lawnmowing sluice at the garden hose, through grilling up dinner at the BBQ, all the way to dousing the campfire and crawling into your tent. At an even 4%, it’s going to be crisp and clean and go down with a smoothness. Packaged in 473ml cans, you can grab a few (or a flat!) from the brewery or order for delivery.

Returning out of Miramichi’s Timber Ship Brewing, Scruples SMaSH is a limited-time can release named after an old Opera House in Miramichi. The 3rd floor of the Opera House had a bar named “Scruples” and this beer is in honour of that. Brewed with Maris Otter malt and Azacca hops, this is meant to mimic the pineapple flavour of it’s house cocktail, the Grog. This is 5.6% and 40 IBU. Grab this one from the brewery today. 

Veering away from the seasonable summer crushers that dominate the scene at this time of year, Halifax’s Propeller has something completely different on the go this week. Wild Ale is, well, a wild ale, fermented with a less cultivated, and thus less predictable, strain of yeast. Presenting a base crisp and bready malt character, you’ll find layers of flavor in the form of ripe orchard fruits, a decided tartness, and some funky and earthy notes. As it was barrel aged, you’ll no doubt detect some tannins and maybe a hint of sweetness as well. Reasonably light, at 4.7% ABV, this will be one to savor and consider. Bottled in 500ml bottles, you can grab one at any of the four Prop Shops (including the newly opened Bedford location, which is now open for sitdown pints!) or at Bishop’s Cellar.

Nova Scotia has some badass tourist destinations and one of them is Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Site. But the magic of its restoration would be incomplete without the life that is breathed in by the historical recreators and the other folks of the Fortress of Louisbourg Association. Sydney’s Breton Brewing knows this well and has teamed up once again with the Association to produce another batch of Île Royale Saison. Based on a grist of wheat, oats, and rye, and an additional fermentable contribution of molasses, it was fermented with the Ardennes yeast strain for a classic dry French saison character, with notes of spice and hints of fruit. Fairly light, at 4.8% ABV, it’s available in cans from the taproom and home delivery in CBRM (home delivery in HRM next week), you can also find it pouring on draught at the La Taverne Storehouse at the historic site itself.

Chef Stephen Barrett, aka Seasoned Plate, is the chef friend to breweries and cideries across the region, has teamed up with Antigonish’s Candid Brewing to bring us Sun Kissed Strawberry Saison. Available now on tap and in cans at the brewery, this 5.5% ABV beer started life as a spicy and fruity saison, thanks to the Belle Saison yeast from Lallemand, before a healthy dose of Strawberry purée was added. Be sure to check out SP’s continuing Pints & Plates series, where each week he pairs a unique recipe with a Nova Scotian beer and brewery. This week’s feature is Spiced Chicken and Hummus with Off Track’s Universal Soldier Kolsch.

Hot off the heels of last weekend’s Big Axe Craft Beer Festival, Big Axe Brewery has still managed to pump out a new release. Brewed, “in honor of our Troops who serve and have served,” Green Eyed Pale balances malty character with hop-derived elements of candied orange aromas and fresh fruit and citrus pith flavors. When sweet malt meets citrus and a firm bitterness it sounds like a classic American Pale Ale to us! This 4.8% ABV beauty is pouring on draught or available in cans to go at the BAB taproom, and you’ll also be able to find it on tap at various local restaurants.

Straight out of Rothesay (that’s in New Brunswick), Hammond River Brewing has a few returning beers with a couple of lagers. Seeng Light is a 4% lager featuring Basmati rice and Seeng Strong is a 7.2% lager with more malty notes. Pick these up from the brewery now.

Heading up to Newfoundland, to Paradise, no less, we find Banished Brewing has a new batch of Out the Gate pouring, the first since last year, and one of the brewery’s first recipes. An Abbey Ale, sans abbey or monks, it manages to carry on the stylistic tradition of malt flavors paired with candy and bubblegum notes. Falling neatly into the “Singel” category, at 5.3%, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a simple beer; in fact at that ABV we figure there’s an opportunity to contemplate the complexity that happens when malt, hops, and especially Belgian yeast strains get together and make magic. This one’s on tap at the brewery and packaged in cans for both the Banished retail shop and wider distribution in the area.

Staying on the Rock, we have plenty of news from Port Rexton Brewing Company who are celebrating seven years in operation this weekend! With their Birthday Bash happening tomorrow, they are releasing 7 Cherry IPA. The 5.8% ABV IPA has a medium bitterness and clean character, that doesn’t get in the way of the cherry flavour and aroma. Available on tap and in cans at the brewery Saturday, and across the island starting next week. We’ve got the full rundown on the Bash in last week’s post (hourly rotating tap all day!), with even more details on the Lawnya Vawnya Concert, Screen Printing, and plenty of food options, on their Insta page. The fun kicks off at noon and goes all day/night!

You won’t have to wait, however, for a returning summer favourite this week in the form of Port Rexton’s fruited ale, Flight of the Mango. Packed with mango purée and sweetened with lactose, this one is bright orange and hazy with a full mouthfeel, and plenty of mango aroma and flavor. Weighing in at just 5% ABV, despite the sweetness you can expect it to be quite crushable. Grab some cans or a growler fill to go from the PR taproom, or sit and contemplate a pint (or maybe pints). It will also see wider distribution to the usual Port Rexton retailers in the coming weeks.

OG Ales, of Magaguadavic, NB, is continuing to bring new beers to pair with their dome experience on Magaguadavic Lake. Out this week is Overcast, a session IPA at 4.4%, that brings a light and refreshing mouthfeel paired with luscious tropical hop flavors of pineapple, mango, and passionfruit all of which are balanced by a firm bitterness courtesy of some Chinook hops from nearby Lakeview Hops. Although that one is only pouring in the taproom, their Solstice red IPA, 5.5% ABV and with a west coast vibe, sounds like it’s been reworked a little and is not only available on-site but is also packaged in cans and headed to the ANBL.

A new one out of Fredericton’s Trailway is a collaboration release with Toronto’s Blood Brothers Brewing. This one actually came out with its first release two years ago, but they’re back with another iteration. Whales All Day is an 8.5% Double IPA packed with Riwaka, Mosaic and Sabro hops. It’s got huge notes of pineapple, stone fruit and grapefruit. This is available at the Fredericton and Saint John’s tap rooms. And check their job listings for your chance to become part of the Trailway family, whether it’s in the brewhouse, selling their beer, or helping to tell people all about it! Dildo Brewing has teamed up with Piatto Pizzeria to craft an Italian Pilsner, which has hit their taps and shelves today! Brewed to complement the pizza and cuisine available at Piatto, the herbal and citrus hop notes shine come through for a balance to the acidity from the tomato sauce on the pies. This beer is rolling out to NLCs and C-stores over the weekend, and will make a great evening in as part of a takeaway bundle coming soon to Maries stores too!

Half Cocked Brewing is celebrating their Sixth Anniversary in North Grant tomorrow, July 22nd, with a good old-fashioned Hootenanny! Opening at noon, they’ll have plenty of great food options from The Crafty Cooks, including fish tacos, cheddar sausages, and pulled pork sandwiches. And of course, you need great music at any party, so from 3 PM, their stage will be full with The Ceilidhmen, The J-Walkers, and Shane Arsenault. Plus a dozen beer options a-flowing, including a couple of new beers to wet your whistle. If you’re not able to be there, we feel bad for you! Congratulations to the Half Cocked Team!

We’re getting you ready for the return of the largest festival of next month, Halifax’s Seaport Beer and Fizz Festival. Plus we’re going to give you a chance to win your way in!!

Atlantic Canada’s largest celebration of Beer, Cider, Soda, RTD, and Seltzer is back again in three short weeks! Halifax Seaport Cider & Beerfest is returning to the Halifax Waterfront for its fifteenth year Thursday August 10 through Saturday the 12th. Fingers crossed for great weather, as it will be outside, but we can tell you the most excellent news that they have been able to return to an all-inclusive ticket price, thanks to some fierce negotiations with NS Alcohol and Gaming. While the finalized list hasn’t yet been finalized, we know there will be more than eighty producers and hundreds of different beers, ciders, seltzers, sodas, and everything in between, representing Atlantic producers (yes, four breweries from Newfoundland will be pouring: Bannerman, Ninepenny, Port Rexton, and Quidi Vidi), as well as those from across the country and our neighbours to the South in Maine (Baxter Brewing, Lone Pine, Mason’s, Portland Zoo, and Sebago). Now spanning three days, with the Thursday evening session being perfect for those who’d like to start their weekend *just a little bit earlier*. We’re happy to provide a note to your employer, should you need it!

Ticket pricing for the sessions are quite reasonable, with advance tickets for Thursday night being only $35 (+ fees & taxes), and Friday evening and Saturday afternoon and evening only $45+. If you’re the kind of person who likes a bit of extra time on the floor to chat with the brewers, or maybe hit the special brews that may run out a bit early, VIP tickets are available for every session for only $20 more, allowing you entry an hour early and a special glass to keep! We end this week with tragic news from Inverness that Dallas Lewis, Brewmaster of Route 19 Brewing, passed away. An employee since the beginning, and publicly credited by Route 19 with brewing, “every single batch of beer we ever made,” he was a valued teammate and community member. Brewing is a tough job and it is a special person who can turn it into a fulfilling career. Though we didn’t know him personally, he was a part of the greater Atlantic Canada beer community and we’ll be raising a glass to Dallas; we humbly suggest you consider doing the same. We also note that there is a GoFundMe that has been set up in Dallas’ name to benefit his family.

We’re happy to share news of another new brewery opening its doors in rural Newfoundland, this time in Baie Verte. Little North Brewhouse has been in development for many years, and unfortunately was delayed in part due to ACOA funding for breweries drying up in 2019, when there was thought to be too many breweries in Newfoundland. Ha! There have been five breweries open since then, and Little North makes brewery #22! Thankfully, the folks behind Little North have persevered, and while their taproom plans in Baie Verte are on hold for the time being, their first beer has hit the shelves of Central NLCs today. Short Straw is a 6.7% ABV New England IPA, bursting with notes of citrus and mango, in a hazy body. Look for it at the NLCs in Corner Brook, Grand-Falls Windsor, and Gander, and will be on the shelves at 410 Grocery in Baie Verte any minute now! We’ll have plenty more with the crew behind Little North in the coming weeks.

From one opening to another, the long-anticipated Bedford location of Propeller Brewing is opening tomorrow, July 1st! Located at 1225 Bedford Highway (at the base of Fourth Street), this purpose-built building is their first to sport a drive-thru window! While the taproom (with both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a kitchen) is set to open in another few weeks, the Prop Shop is open for retail and drive-thru 12 PM – 12 AM Saturday, 12 – 10 PM Sunday, and retail 12 – 10 PM & drive-thru 4 – 10 PM Monday. (BTW, all of the PropShops are open from noon until 8 or later all weekend long, so you don’t have to worry about running out of great local beer to fuel your long weekend celebrations) And if Bedford is your home base, or you don’t mind commuting, they are hiring for the retail and kitchen now, email noah@drinkpropeller.ca today to apply/learn more! Of course, we’ll keep you in the loop when the taproom and kitchen are set to open.

There’s lots happening on the North Shore this week with a few new beers from Tatamagouche Brewing. A few weeks ago we told you about their Twin Shores Collaboration Pale Ale with Propeller, but what we didn’t tell you is that they’ve also been letting some Brettanomyces work away on another pale ale, which is out now. Kudos Brett Pale Ale features the New Zealand hop Nectaron, with the fermentation and hop additions ledding to notes of grapefruit and stone fruit. Cans of the 4.6% ABV pale ale are available now through both breweries. In other Tata news, keep an eye out for a barrel aged version of their Irish Stout, Hierlihy. This version was aged for 10 months in third-use cognac barrels that saw the introduction of a Brett Lambicus strain during their prior use. The aging process has allowed the beer’s malt character to come through the forefront, which combined with the subtle brett character, is giving some fruity and vinous notes. This one won’t be packaged, so keep an eye out for kegs and casks at the brewery and better beer bars in the province. 

Across the Northumberland, Upstreet is releasing the 8th version of their annual De Novo series, which coincides with their anniversary. De Novo 8 is a big one, a 10% Triple IPA coming in at 40 IBUs. Starting with a grain bill of 2-row, flaked and crystal wheat, flaked oats, and Golden Naked Oats, it then saw big additions of Trident, Sabro, Samba and NHZ-107 hops. Expect a creamy and luscious drinking experience, with notes of stone fruit, pineapple, citrus and lightly toasted marshmallow. Canning is happening today (Friday) and as of publication time, they’re on track to release cans at the taproom and the downtown Craft Beer Corner later today. Is there anything that screams Atlantic Canada summer more than a lobster boil and beer? Well, maybe high gas prices, but we digress. In their tribute to New Brunswick summers, Moncton’s Tire Shack Brewery has released Lobster Boil Gose. 50 kg of lobsters were added to the boil on brewday, to go along with malt and hops that were all grown within the province. The resulting salty and sour wheat beer is available now in cans and on tap at the brewery. 

For something different, let’s head to Wolfville where Annapolis Cider is releasing Imperial Gimlet, the latest in their Something Different series. The inspiration for this one comes from one of the cidery’s favourite cocktails, the French Gimlet, a stiff cocktail featuring gin, elderflower liquor and lime juice. The cider featuring two fermentations, additions of lime juice, hops and elderflower, leading to a floral aroma, notes of berry and a bit of acidity. It also packs a punch at 9.1%, but decidedly less punch than an actual gimlet. And because the folks at Annapolis Cider are mighty swell people, $0.50 from each purchase will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross fund supporting Nova Scotia’s recovery from the recent wildfires. 

Back in New Brunswick, Trailway is releasing the latest in its Land Series, with Marsh Land Tripel. Per the style, this is a bigger beer, coming in at 9% ABV. Expect some biscuity malt notes, with aromatics of apricot and banana from the Belgian yeast, and a grassy bitterness from the hops. Cans are out now at the Fredericton and Saint John taprooms. 

2 Crows Brewing has 2 Beers Releasing today, in decidedly distinct styles. Brewed during this month’s CBAC, the Crows invited folks from Calgary’s The Establishment to play around in the brewery. Fashionable People is a fuzzy and hazy IPA, brewed with flaked oats and wheat on top of the base of pilsner malt, along with some chit malt too. The hopping began in the mash with Cascade, and continued in the boil with Columbus, before post-boil hopping with the quartet of classic and new hops Idaho 7, Centennial, Solero, and HBC 1019. Fermenting with Verdant yeast also assisted in keeping the beer hazy and juicy. Mango, citrus, passion fruit will dance on your tongue, and you could even grab a couple to enjoy at Ashtray Rock! Watch out, this was a small batch, so act quickly to avoid disappointment.

Also from 2 Crows is the latest in their Jamboree sour series: Watermelon + Kiwi. Sticking to a base of pilsner and wheat malts, along with help from flaked wheat and flaked oats, JW+K was soured with Lactobacillus plantarum before fermentation with Escarpment Labs’ Ebbegarden Kveik yeast. After that was complete, tons (well, kilos) of kiwi and watermelon purees were added to the beer during conditioning, and it was allowed to finish carbonating naturally. You can find Jamboree: Watermelon + Kiwi on tap and in cans at the brewery now, with cans hitting the shelves of the provincial liquor corporation later in July.

Sydney’s Breton Brewing is celebrating eight years of beer with a new seasonal release, Mango IPA. A hazy beer packed with plenty of Citra and Amarillo hops for a big citrus punch, it also features (duh) mango to kick the juiciness up a big notch. Coming in at 6.5% ABV, you’ll find it pouring in the taproom for pints and fills as well as in cans to go (and do remember, they ship province-wide). If you’re in the area, definitely consider stopping by tomorrow for a combination Canada Day and Breton Birthday celebration with live music, deals on Island Time Lager, and Scots Dogs on site with food.

In Bay Roberts, NL, Baccalieu Trail Brewing also has a fruited beer out this week, one they put together with Rough Waters Brewing way across the island in Deer Lake. PLURNT is listed as a “late-hopped imperial pineapple sour” which certainly has some connotations. Though not an IPA, this one saw some late additions of El Dorado, which are known for providing a tropical punch, plus some other hop varieties they’re electing to keep under wraps for now, but which provide flavors and aromas that marry well with the pineapple purée that the beer was conditioned on for four days before packaging. On the bigger side for a sour, hence the “imperial” category, it landed at 6.8% ABV. Look for this one already on tap in the Baccalieu Trail taproom for pints and fills, and the cans will hit the shelves tomorrow at BT’s regular retailers just in time for your Canada Day celebrations. As for the name, don’t ask us, we have no idea either!

Continuing their Make/shift series of collaborations with local businesses, this week Landwash Brewery has released Verafin Session IPA. Taking cues and inspiration from the group from Verafin who came into the brewery earlier this month, this 4.5% ABV hoppy little thing features Cascade in the mash and early fermentation, with two New Zealand hops, Motueka and Rakau, after that. Cans and draught are available at the brewery in Mount Pearl now, with cans at their regular retailers shortly too!

Microbrasserie Ateepic, located at the Edmundston Golf Course, has a new beer on tap today, promising to be a refreshing drink for after (or before/instead of) your round of golf. Coup Sûr is a 4.5% Gose, that salty and sour style from Germany that has migrated to North America in the last decade. Ateepic’s take on it features both cucumber and lime, to enhance the refreshment and satisfying character. Find it on tap at the brewery this weekend!

Up in Fredericton, NB, Half Cut Brewing is hiring for a couple of available slots, one in the brewery, the other in the taproom. On the production side, they’re looking for a Production Assistant to help with all aspects of the brewing process, from brewing, to packaging, to general labour, to cleaning (especially the cleaning, we expect). And in the taproom, they’re looking for a FT or PT bartender. Both positions are for ages 19+. Lastly, a few quick hits before you get on with your Canada Day weekend!

Annapolis Brewing has brought back their Duck Slayer Czech Amber Lager this week. Giving you a bit of a maltier option for the summer while still being crisp and refreshing, it features classic Saaz hops for a bit of balancing spiciness. Super crushable at 4.7% and 27 IBU, it’s available now at the brewery.

Bedford’s Off Track Brewing set out to make perfect summer brew and landed on Basinview Lager, a 4.2% ABV American Lager. Pale yellow, crisp, and ultra crushable, it’ll pair well with post-softball aches and pains.

Halifax’s Unfiltered has their classic summer sour, Sour Motherfucker back today for those folks who aren’t into hops. Not a little beer by any means, it’s 6.5% with plenty of fruity and refreshing tart cherry character and, as a bonus for those whose dietary needs warrant it, this year’s version is also gluten reduced!

A sneaky surprise release from Serpent Brewing on the weekend is still around, but definitely won’t last til Monday. Summer Fling is a 6.6% ABV Saison, to which they have added citron, ginger, and honey, for a citrus and lightly spicy saison fit for some summer days and nights. As there is only a single keg available, we suggest heading your way there today, and while you’re at it, sample their new food menu too!

Banished Brewing in Paradise has brought back their Makes Sense Hazy IPA this week, absolutely chock-full of hops, giving a OJ vibes thanks to the Citra, Nelson, and Solero added throughout the process. Look for it on tap and in cans at the brewery, hitting local retail shelves in the next few days.

Happy Friday y’all! We hope those who attended the Canadian Brewing Awards and Conference in Halifax enjoyed their time here, and went home with some hardware in their carry-on. And that the hangovers didn’t make this week too unbearable! There was a decent enough showing from the AC breweries (summarized here), and we can all work together to have an even better showing in Hamilton next year!

In light of the devastating fires that have been burning in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for the past two weeks, Jym Line Glassware, provider of glasses and growlers to many Atlantic Canadian breweries, has launched a fundraiser with the Craft Brewers of Nova Scotia to launch Together for NS. At participating breweries, you can help by donating a minimum of $20, and in return you’ll receive a specially-branded glass and a large sample of beer to say thanks! All of that donation will go to the Canadian Red Cross and their Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canadian Fire Relief, with both the provincial and federal governments matching that donation as well! That one sample is worth at least $60 to those looking to rebuild their lives, with the goal to sell all of the glasses to raise more than $150,000. More details on the participating breweries is here (and is growing), there should be one in your neck of the woods!

One beer launched last weekend for the CBAC, but after blog publishing, was the Nova Scotia collaboration Fer ‘Fax Sake!. Garrison Brewing welcomed in breweries from around HRM and beyond to take part in this “Welcome to Nova Scotia” beer, with Backstage Brewing out of Stellarton, Antigonish’s Candid Brewing, Colby Village’s Hardisty Brewing, Spryfield’s Serpent Brewing, and Two Islands Brewery from Parrsboro. This 5.0% Pale Ale was formulated to be juicy and quaffable, and features plenty of late-usage hops, with Apollo, Citra, Eclipse, Idaho 7, and Simcoe filling the bill. Think tropical, with mango, papaya, and lychee notes throughout. Grab this in small cans, perfect for packing in and out on a hike, at the host brewery’s retail locations!

Fresh off of some new awards from the CBAs, Trailway Brewing has two new releases. No rest for the winners… First up is a new iteration of The Blend, their Smoothie Sour series. This one features pineapple, passion fruit and black currant, with each can having about 200 grams of pure, real fruit. With all smoothie sours, keep these cold and try to drink as fresh as possible, and a little rolling beforehand won’t hurt to even it out. There is lots of real fruit to chug down in a tasty 5.3% package. Get this in cans only, and available at Fredericton and Saint John locations.

Second up is a brand new release with a cool label that may seem familiar. Sunny C is an Orange sour made with orange juice concentrate. The concept here was a brunch beer, sort of like a mimosa. The sour style works well with the citrus and orange, pairing nicely with the tartness. This is 3.5% and totally crushable. This is available now in cans from both locations. 

Paradise’s Banished Brewing is celebrating some vibrant new artwork in the brewery this week, as their long-time artistic collaborator Paul G Hammond unveiled a massive mural named Astral Puffins’ Paradise. Check out the Making Of video, as well as the finished product! And what better way to celebrate than with a new beer, and PGH label, release?! Paint With Light does just that, featuring a painter working on a canvas. When first grabbed from the freezer or backpack, the canvas is blank, ready for anything the painter (or drinker) may wish to fill in. But when brought into sunlight, the canvas springs alive with colour, thanks to the UV-activated photochromic ink used. A beautiful and fitting tribute to this relationship, named thanks to Jason Normore and his attitude towards photography. The beauty does not stop with the label, as the beer inside the can lives up to the high bar set on the outside. A 6.0% Hazy IPA, double dry hopped with Loral Cryo and the Cryo Pop blend, both offering plenty of tropical aroma with very little hop material to increase yield. Think citrus and floral, pineapple and stone fruit, both on the nose and on the tongue. Available at the brewery on tap and in cans, and coming to local retailers real soon!

Chester’s Tanner & Co Brewing is wading into the Cold IPA style, a bit of a tongue-in-cheek amping up of the traditional West Coast IPA style, and rebuff of the juicy/hazy IPAs of the past several years. Conceived as a clean IPA with a pronounced bitterness, featuring a bit of corn or rice in the malt bill to reduce the sweetness of residual sugar, keeping it crisp and easy drinking. And decidedly not hazy/thick, and not just another name for an India Pale Lager! For a fun treatise from the originators of the style, Wayfinder Beer out of Portland, OR, check this out. Back to Nova Scotia, and Tanner is rolling out 1320 Cold IPA, at 6.5% and about 50 IBU, it fits right in the pocket of the style. The name is inspired by an experimental hop, YQH-1320, which has imparted flavours and aromas of guava, grapefruit, pineapple, and even a hint of coconut in the beer. Malt from Horton Ridge is in the glass too, supporting our local malting company to boot! Cans of 1320 are available at both Tanner locations (at the brewery in Chester Basin, as well as their taproom in the town of Chester), as well as their online shop for local and HRM delivery.

North Brewing is releasing a beer this week that is of its time but also a reflection of history (but fairly recent history). It’s safe to say that IPA is still a dominant style in the craft beer world these days, but it’s also fair to say that many, if not most, of the IPAs on the market these days would be well-nigh unrecognizable as such to a craft beer drinker from, say, 2004 (although, to be fair, the opposite might be true as well for those who started drinking craft after 2015 or so). North Brewing’s new Let’s Go! IPA is a bit of a throwback to the darker, clearer, and more bitter standard that many of us cut our teeth on. Featuring pale malt, Munich, and some crystal malt for flavour and colour, they leveraged four different hop varieties (probably at least a couple of which begin with the letter ‘C’) across both the kettle and the whirlpool, yielding a well-rounded hop character. Carefully keeping the bitterness in check to ensure it’s not too foreign to the modern palate, the team is quite happy with the way it turned out. You can grab this 6.1% beer in cans at all North locations and it will also hit the shelves at the NSLC next week.

We’ve got a limited release out of Breton Brewing this week and its return to bottle-conditioned form! Stirling Hefeweizen is a core brand in cans, but like last year, Breton is featuring a limited run of 500ml bottles that have undergone a bottle conditioning process for several weeks, staying true to the style’s European roots. The recipe is their same authentic German Hefeweizen style and features the big lovely banana and clove flavours you would come to expect. Still staying at 4.6% and very delicious, this is available today from the brewery and online for delivery in CBRM and HRM. 

In Annapolis Royal, the folks at Annapolis Brewing are the latest to ask an online “AI” (ChatGPT in this case) to produce a beer recipe and produce the result. As always, we recommend reserving judgement on the concept as long as the beer is good. Produced on their one barrel pilot system, the beer is a classic APA, with a full malty body and a balancing hop character. Dry hopped with a touch of Centennial that, full disclosure, wasn’t part of the recipe as written, subtle hints of pine and spice pair with citrus for an easy drinking pint. Due to the small batch nature of this one, ChatGPT Pale Ale is only available on tap at the brewery on St George Street in downtown Annapolis Royal.

The gang at Mauzy Cider, operating out of Banished Brewing in Paradise, NL, have a new release this week, and let’s just say there’s a lot going on there. Forest Farmer’s Piquette is, as is right in the name there, a piquette, meaning it is primarily made by adding water to previously pressed fruit, macerating for a period to pull out the remaining sugars, and then fermenting the result. In this case, as Mauzy is a cidery, the pomace was from apples, namely William’s Pride, Liberty, and Honeycrisp from Jefford’s Orchard in Kelligrews and additional Honeycrisp from Mt. Scio Farm. Local Paradise water (“the essence of life!”) provided the rehydration. Giving the product a bit of extra kick were Centennial hops from Jenning’s Farm, which were co-fermented in the primary. Once primary was done, a secondary fermentation was undergone that featured lees from Mauzy’s Dolgo crabapple cider and De Chaunac grape skins from Fixed Farms. Lastly, at packaging, Baccalieu Trail Honey was used to bottle condition the result, which comes in at 4.6% ABV. Only 60 cases of 341ml bottles of this ultra-local product were produced and we’ll be honest, we’re a little jealous of the folks who are going to get to try this one. Expect a refreshing and spritzy, but also slightly funky experience, with a touch of salinity to encourage that next sip. Look for it at Banished, but also at a few other places around the area, including Bar Brewdock, Chinced Meats, Papillon Cocktail Bar, Portage Restaurant, and Toslow.

From one island to another, Upstreet Brewing comes to you this week with a new iteration from their Neon Friday IPA series. This new release, in the NEIPA style, is a big tropical bomb packed with as much hops as their system can handle. Featuring big amounts of flaked wheats and oats, the hop bill features as much cryo Idaho 7 and cryo Mosaic as could be handled in the whirlpool. The hop part doesn’t stop there, as Idaho 7 and Azacca dry hopping rounds out the beer. There are big peach, pineapple and mango flavours. This one is for sale at the taproom and Craft Beer Corner and PEI Liquor stores for the summer. It may be available in Dartmouth later this summer as well. 

We’ve got two beer festivals in Nova Scotia going on this weekend, check at least one of them out…

A few more newsbites before we release you for the week!

We’ve got two returning releases from the two-headed calf brewery. Tatamagouche Brewing brings back a pair of Berliner Weiße buddies in Buddha’s Hand and Guava Heist. First up, Buddha’s Hand is a type of citrus fruit from Asia that is zesty and is quite similar to lemon. This is 3.8%  and with some floral notes on top of the lemonade type flavour in a thirst quenching summer hit. Guava Heist adds real guava to the Berliner Weiße base, with the base beer aged on organic guava. Big guava flavour comes through here in a really refreshing package. These are both available from the brewery, online and will likely show up at some private stores around HRM. 

Short and sweet (or tall and sweet, if you’re talking about the cans!) update from Lake City Cider. Watermelon is a brand new release from the Darkside cidery (Darkcidery?) that is a blend of their apple cider, blueberry and watermelon. It’s a bit dry, but also sweet, with a great punch of watermelon flavour for the hot summer ahead.  This is 6% and available at the cidery on tap and in 473ml cans (and online, too!).

Now to a returning beer with some wider distribution for Spryfield’s finest. Serpent Brewing’s Townie Overpass Syndrome NEIPA and is the second product of Serpent’s to hit the NSLC shelves and will be available in 40 locations as of next week. As a reminder for this beer, it’s basically a Belgian New England IPA, using Belgian Witbier yeast with their New England IPA recipe. The hop bill features large helpings of Mandarina Bavaria, Amarillo, and Ahtanum. This is 6.3% and 40 IBU and if you want to try it now, you could get it from the Serpent brewery.

In other news, we are joining the celebrations for Think Brewing who are moving to a new and larger space in Moncton as of June 1st! They’ll be adding a new beer release to their core lineup and are moving to bigger and better things.
